Grove City uses a balanced team effort to take down South at home

GROVE CITY, Ohio -- In an OCC vs. City League clash on Thursday night, Grove City (4-6) got the better of South (5-3) at home, taking down the Bulldogs 47-35.

Jumping out to a quick lead, Grove City forced a couple of early turnovers and got things going in transition to build a lead that they never relinquished.

The Greyhounds used an all-around team effort for all four quarters in the win and it started early on as all five of their starters scored in the first frame to help them take a 16-11 lead after one.

After each team scored 11 points in the second quarter, Grove City headed into the locker room up five at the break and won each of the last two quarters to build on this lead and come out on top.

Struggling to find a rhythm offensively, South hit some shots to keep things interesting in the second half but never forced enough turnovers to create easy offense that would turn into a run.

Grove City mixed up their looks on the defensive end throughout the night, handled South's pressure well for the most part and hit timely shots when they needed them.

Truly receiving contributions from everyone, the Greyhounds did not have a single player score more than nine points in the win.

They were led by nine points each from their big man duo of Campton Williams and Kraig Gilbert while backcourt mates Daniel Fetty and Keegan Holmstrom each added eight of their own.

Moving to 4-6 following the win, the Greyhounds will receive their toughest test yet when they travel to Gahanna next Friday, January 7, for an OCC-Ohio showdown.

With a nice collection of talented sophomores and juniors, Grove City is a program to keep an eye on over the next couple of years.

South was led by 14 points from Lajames Washington while no other Bulldog contributed more than six.

They will be back in action on Saturday at Harvest Prep when they take on Parkersburg South (WV) as apart of Harvest Prep New Year's Bash.

Kraig Gilbert (6'7 traditional big / Grove City / 2024): Gilbert is a very intriguing young prospect for Grove City. At a lengthy 6-foot-7, the sophomore has a great build that he is still working his way into. We were impressed with his skill on the offensive end on Thursday night as he banked in a turnaround out of the post, converted on a right-handed hook shot and also stepped outside and nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key. Gilbert was also active on the glass all night and came up with a block on the defensive side of the ball as well. Grove City has not had a true big man for several years now and Gilbert provides them with just that as he complements their young backcourt nicely.

Keegan Holmstrom (6'0 PG / Grove City / 2024): While Holmstrom made a name for himself with his performance on the baseball diamond as a freshman, he turned in a 26 point performance early this season against Pickerington North and it left us intrigued to see what the young guard is capable of doing on the hardwood. Holmstrom got involved early for Grove City on Thursday, jumping the passing lanes for a steal leading to an easy bucket to start the game and doing a good job of applying pressure to South's ball handlers all night to force a couple of turnovers. Offensively, the sophomore hit a pair of nice floaters, had a finish through contact and laid in a lob pass coming from the far sideline on an inbounds play. While his future is likely going to be on the baseball diamond, Holmstrom is a talented young guard that will continue to help Grove City win games moving forward.

Lajames Washington (6'2 SF / South / 2024): Leading all scorers with 14 points on Thursday, it was the motor of Washington that helped him create offense for South. Doing all of his work inside, the sophomore had a handful of second chance opportunities, one of which was an and-one, and stayed active on the offensive and defensive glass all night. We love how hard Washington plays as even though shots weren't falling for South on Thursday, he was doing the dirty work and providing them with the spark that they needed to keep things close enough to the point where a quick run could give them the lead.
