Slow fourth quarter helps Patriots survive

POWELL, Ohio -- Thursday afternoon’s non-conference matchup between Worthington Christian and Olentangy Liberty came down to the wire, and a late turnover proved to be the difference in 32-31 Patriots victory.

Olentangy Liberty led by as many as eight in the third quarter, but a Meghan Mayotte bucket cut the Patriot lead to just one point to start the fourth. Junior Addison Marston answered for Worthington Christian with a bucket to expand the lead back to three, and it held there for a while as Liberty burned several minutes off the clock and the Warriors were forced to foul.

Marston and sophomore Emma Karagheuzoff both missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Worthington Christian renewed life, and a Blessing King basket cut the lead down a single point once more. Another Liberty turnover, forced by King, gave the Warriors possession, but a Jaeda Tagoe three fell short as time expired.

The Patriots had a hot start to the game, leading 9-5 after one quarter. Sophomore Sarah Mitchell sank two three pointers and senior Jordan Rich added another.

Senior Taylor Redman carried the Patriots in the second, scoring all five points. Mayotte came alive scoring five of her own helping to cut the lead to just two points at 14-12, heading into halftime.

Mayotte and sophomore Gigi Bower traded baskets in the third. Bower scored 11 points in the quarter while Mayotte connected for eight. The Liberty lead grew to eight points midway through the quarter but Worthington Christian battled back thanks to a 7-0 run. The Warriors cut the lead to one point before Marston connected to give the Patriots a 30-27 lead going into the final frame.

Bower led the Patriots with 11 and was supported by Marston with seven, Mitchell with six and Redmon with five. Mayotte paced the Warriors with 15 in the loss. King added eight.

Let’s take a look at Thursday’s top performers:

Gigi Bower (5’9 G / Olentangy Liberty / 2024): Bower saw massive attention all afternoon but still managed to score 11 points, all in the third quarter. She continues to be deadly from three and her jab-and-shoot move is nearly perfect. She maintained composure despite the constant pressure and never stopped moving without the ball. Bower continues to impress us.

Taylor Redman (6’0 F / Olentangy Liberty / 2022): Redman was the only Patriot to score in the second quarter. She is strong, a good decision maker, can handle the ball under pressure and is a distributive defender. She has a high motor and likes to compete. Redman attacks well and finishes through contact.

Meghan Mayotte (5’9 G / Worthington Christian / 2023): Mayotte was the leader of the Warriors on Thursday and impacted the game in every way possible. She is a consistent rebounder, great defender and had multiple blocks. She scored mostly at the rim and is excellent attacking off the dribble. She could make an impact at the next level in a number of programs.

Blessing King (5’11 F / Worthington Christian / 2022): King was the best athlete on the floor Thursday. She plays nearly every position and can outrun anyone. She handles the ball with confidence and finishes strong through contact. We are most impressed with her defensive effort and motor - she is constantly making plays to make her team better.
