Shot making, tough defense leads New Albany over Olentangy Berlin

NEW ALBANY, Ohio -- The key for New Albany on offense was to spread the floor and force the defense to adjust towards their 52-43 win over Olentangy Berlin. Everyone on the floor for the Eagles could hit a three and would step out for one. They used this to their advantage and forced Berlin to close out which opened driving lanes. New Albany also used their size inside to command the boards and finish through contact in the lane.

After a couple threes by the Eagles gave them a 9-3 lead, Berlin was forced to call a timeout after three minutes of action. The Bears switched into a 2-3 zone after this timeout which seemed to help a bit as the first quarter ended with New Albany having a 19-10 lead.

Berlin’s offense settled down and they came out of a timeout with a full court press in the middle of the 2nd quarter. They quickly got out of this press as New Albany beat it and got an easy layup on the other end. At halftime, New Albany built a 29-20 lead behind 10 points from Will Powell. Derek Goodman also had 10 in the first half for the Bears.

It seemed that every time New Albany went on a run, they couldn’t pull away from Berlin. The Bears stuck around the whole game and after back-to-back buckets from Jason InBody they trailed by seven with 5:36 left in the game. However, the Eagles kept their foot on the gas and didn’t allow Berlin to come back. New Albany won 52-43 to move to 5-1 on the season as Berlin dropped to 1-5. Justin Perry had 13 for the Eagles and Derek Goodman had 13 for the Bears.

Will Powell (F-2023- New Albany) Powell showed his inside-out scoring ability, finishing with 10 points on the night. Even though he operates as the team’s five, Powell stepped out and hit two shots from long range. At 6-foot-6, the junior big was still able to work inside as he scored on a nice post up. He used his long frame to contest and alter shots on the defensive end. He also has a good nose for the ball and grabbed numerous rebounds during the game. Powell will be a key piece for the Eagles' spread offense going forward.

Braylen Nash (G- 2024- New Albany) Nash is a great off-guard player for New Albany who excels at creating his own shot. The sophomore is quick off the bounce and explodes to the rim. He dropped eight points for the Eagles in the game. He drove baseline twice during the game and finished over his defender. He also used a screen and hit a three to close out the half. Nash also passes well out of traps and sometimes runs the point for his team. He stays active on defense and uses his quickness to cause steals and deflections. Nash is a second scoring option that the Eagles will need.

Jason Inbody (G-2023- Olentangy Berlin) Inbody continued to lead this Bears offense as he has done during the season. The junior guard ended with 16 and was the game’s top scorer. Inbody is one of the few players I’ve seen who passes up a three for a mid range jumper. He did that twice as he used a pump fake to hit a free throw line jumper. Because he is known as a shooter, defenders would close out hard which allowed Inbody to blow by them for easy layups. He had a slow first half with four points but picked it up with 12 in the second half. He shot with efficiency and didn’t play outside of his game. The 6 foot 5 guard took quality shots and is the focal point for opposing defenses moving forward. Inbody will look to continue to lead his team as the season moves on.
