Granville erases 14 point deficit for the win

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Hilliard Davidson and Granville met in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening. The Cate Schieber led Blue Aces overcame a 14 point deficit en route to a 42-37 victory over the Wildcats.

Both teams were off to a hot start from three in the first quarter, making a combined total of five three pointers. A bucket by senior Cate Schieber gave the Blue Aces a four point lead just before senior Kierstyn Liming connected from three. This cut the Granville lead to just one by a score of 10-9 heading into the second quarter.

The Wildcats held Granville to just five points in the second quarter while shooting a high percentage from the field. Liming and senior Abby Emery drained another four threes including two at the end of the quarter that extended the Wildcat lead to ten (25-15) just before the end of the quarter.

Davidson continued their run to start the third, scoring four straight points before Schieber started to take over. She increased her defensive intensity and the rest of the Blue Aces started to follow. She scored eleven points in the quarter on three threes and two free throws. Davidson struggled to get the ball inside the three point line due to Granville’s three-quarter court press and scored just six points in the quarter. The Blue Aces cut the Wildcat lead to two points by a score of 31-29 with one quarter to play.

Granville continued to chip away at the lead. Schieber drained two free throws to give the Blue Aces the lead at 37-35. Senior Kylee Lescas would add another point and Schieber would drain two more free throws to extend their lead to five. Sydney Kauffman connected on a runner down the lane but it was too little, too late for the Wildcats. Schieber would seal the game with two additional free throws.

Schieber led the Blue Aces with a game-high 24. Junior Ella Wigal had an off night but chipped in eight. Emery and Liming led the Wildcats with 14 and 13, respectively.

Let’s take a look at Wednesday’s top performers.

Cate Schieber (5’9 G / Granville / 2022) - Schieber, a Belmont Abbey signee, is one of the best teammates, leaders, and basketball players in Central Ohio. Wednesday night, her energy and motor were the sole reason the Blue Aces picked up the pace in the second half. She is a deadly three point shooter, can attack the basket and finish and is a relentless defender. She shot 8/10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to complete the come from behind win. In addition to her second half heroics, she scored the 1000th point of her career! Congrats Cate!

Kylee Lescas (5’8 G / Granville / 2022) - Lescas came off the bench and was a big spark for Blue Aces. Her defensive intensity was a key in their effort to hold Davidson to 12 second half points. In addition to her defense, she contributed on the offensive end, scoring three points. She has a quick first step and attacks the basket well. She doesn’t play the biggest role on the team but Wednesday night she was incredibly important.

Abby Emery (5’6 G / Hilliard Davidson / 2022) - The duo of Emery and Liming was unstoppable in the first half for Davidson. Emery was efficient from three, knocking down four in the first two frames including two at the end of the second to extend the Wildcats’ lead. She wasn't as effective in the second half but managed to score four of Davidson’s 12 second half points. She is a decent ball handler but could use a little more consistency and confidence.

Kierstyn Liming (5’9 G / Hilliard Davidson / 2022) - Liming was a major reason Davidson boasted a ten point lead heading into halftime. She connected on three three pointers and added a layup in the first half. She has a smooth left handed shot and attacks the basket well. She handles the ball confidently and finds open teammates.
