Nubians firepower too much for Sixers down the stretch

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In the battle for first place in the City League South division, that included many highlight worthy plays, it was the Nubians from Africentric that came out with the win and sole possession of the top spot. Africentric took the Independence Sixers best shot and then some and still came out on the winning side by a score of 90-66.

The separation started in the second quarter as senior leader Dan Wagner electrified the audience and scored 10 points, had some nice assists along with a big steal in that frame alone for Africentric. In the third quarter, junior Dailyn Swain reasserted himself after a six point first quarter as he poured in nine points, two blocks and a steal.

Independence showed fight in the third, though. Antonio Harris’ two triples kept them within striking distance entering the fourth quarter down by only six, 57-51.

City League legends Devon Moore and AJ Davis watched as Dan Wagner went into pure takeover mode in the fourth quarter, tallying 16 total points in the frame and setting the Nubians to pull away from the Sixers.

Wagner led all scorers with 26 points and brought all the energy for the Nubians while Swain poured in 19 and Laron Fuller added 18 for the Nubians. Preston Steele pitched in 13 points that included some nice dunks, Josiah Smith scored seven, Mehki Johnson had four, Leonard Gore and Andre Satchell combined for three to round out the Nubian’s high-octane offense.

Antony Lowery led the Sixers with 11 points followed by Reighn Lowery and Antonio Harris with 10 each. Denarius Crowder scored eight, Christian Byrd pitched in seven while Larry Peters added six, Geremiah Thompson and Terry Madison-Owens III each poured in five. Moussa Sy and Kevon Jackson combined for four to punctuate the scoring for Independence.

The Nubians look to remain unbeaten in City League play Friday when they host West while the Sixers will hope to bounce back against Eastmoor Academy at home.

Dan Wagner (6’1 G / Africentric / 2022): The heart and soul of the team was outstanding, leading all scorers with 26 points while playing high level defense and bringing all the energy for the Nubians. He hit another four three’s, proving once again that he is a three level scorer that can do it all on the court. Wagner also had multiple assists, setting up his teammates for easy buckets. On the defensive end, he was magnificent, accumulating steals that led to easy transition baskets for himself and teammates. The best athlete in the city and the senior leader of the Nubians was nothing short of sensational *Future voice* against the Sixers.

Dailyn Swain (6’8 F / Africentric / 2023): Making everything look easy on the court, Swain showed off a little bit of everything in his bag. Offensively, he scored 19 points and got to the rim whenever he wanted off the dribble while showcasing his playmaking skills with a couple of nice assists. The way he attacks angles with the ball in his hands is next level, never settling for a jump shot when the defense wants him to. On the defensive end, the junior was spectacular as he blocked shots, altered just as many and showed why he is one of the elite all around defenders in the area. The most talented junior in the area was clicking on all cylinders in what was one the most important games of the season.

Laron Fuller (5’10 G / Africentric / 2024): A complete guard in his class, Fuller can do some of everything on the court. He scored 12 points in the first half and 18 overall. The sophomore flat out put the ball in the basket in different types of scenarios. He plays tough perimeter defense and is able to cause havoc when he gets his hands involved. If the Nubians can continue this play then Fuller is an integral part of their championship run.

Antony Lowery (6’2 G / Independence / 2023): His steady hand helped keep the Sixers in the game headed into the final frame. Lowery’s 11 led his team in scoring. The junior was able to knock down perimeter jumpers on the defense as well as break down the defense and get inside. Lowery was never afraid to take shots that he believed were going to drop, his abilities are top-notch and mixed with his confidence to knock down shots that defense’s don’t expect, Lowery is a tough cover.
