What we learned from our first full week in December

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Another week has come and gone, and while it is always going to be hard to condense 100-plus games into 1,000 words, we're going to do our best. Here's what we know:

Five Important Results

  1. Africentric 54, South 52 & Africentric 69, Walnut Ridge 62 (Tuesday, Friday): A pair of huge wins by Africentric this past week, giving themselves a big upper-hand in City League South play. Considering the Nubians should technically have the tie-breaker on both of those schools for the City Championship, those road wins have even more importance.
  2. Reynoldsburg 56, Newark 50 (Friday): The emotional high from beating Pickerington Central last week did not get to last long, as Reynoldsburg went into Jim Allen Gymnasium and scored a huge league win. Julian Heckman and Noah Smith led the Raiders in scoring with 14 & 13 each. The OCC-Buckeye race is going to be a wild one.
  3. Gahanna 63, New Albany 28 (Friday): The gap at the top of the power rankings is only going to get wider if Gahanna keeps playing like they did Friday. The Lions made no doubts in the opening two quarters in their win at New Albany, jumping out to a 39-15 first half lead as the pressure was too much for the Eagles to handle.
  4. Mount Vernon 62, Mansfield Senior 61 (Friday): A bit off the beaten path, but an incredible shot by Owynn Gleason at the buzzer helped erase a four-point deficit in the final 30 seconds, giving the Yellow Jackets a win to open Ohio Cardinal Conference play. When Mount Vernon is playing home in front of The Hive, there's no telling what can happen.
  5. Logan 54, Groveport 51 (Saturday): Logan will be joining the Ohio Capital Conference in a few years, but they are already making their presence felt, knocking off Harvest Prep on Tuesday and then taking down Groveport on Saturday. Tegan Myers, younger brother of former Chieftain star Bo, dropped 25 points in the victory. Groveport's last four games (2-2) have been decided by a grand total of eight points.

Four Facts From the Week

  1. Don't look now, but first-year head coach Brent Cahill had Central Crossing rolling! The Comets earned their first 3-0 start in school history after a 45-40 win over Bishop Ready on Tuesday, and were tied at half with top-five Pickerington Central on Friday. Next up: breaking the record for best 10-game start in school history, which currently sits at 8-2 from the 2003-2004 season.
  2. Speaking of the hottest starts since 2003-2004, Otterbein has been torching the nets at the Division III level, knocking off Muskingum 82-72 on Saturday for their fourth straight win. The 6-1 mark for the Cardinals matches the best start for the program since that season. A road-trip to #10 Marietta on Wednesday will be arguably their biggest test of the young season.
  3. Despite the halftime score at Central Crossing, Pickerington Central had a wild, but crazy week. The crosstown rivalry win over North started the week, and then the news of Sonny Styles' reclassification to 2022 came down the pipe, effectively turning this into his senior season. Styles and the gang capped the week off with a 71-53 win over Dayton Dunbar on Saturday.
  4. Former DeSales star Obed Achirem is on a tear down at Division III Wilmington, quickly turning into a double-double machine. The Stallion grad has four separate games of 10-plus rebounds, three of which are double-doubles. Through eight games, Achirem is averaging 9.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.

Three Players Who Showed Out

  1. Cole Canter, Newark Catholic: Just a week after playing in the state championship football game, Canter led his Green Wave basketball squad to a tough 63-61 win over Sheridan in their season opener on Saturday. Canter dropped 24 points in the win at the Tiger Roundball Classic.
  2. LA Walker, Linden: While LB Towns was sidelined, Walker stepped up and led the Panthers to back to back wins this weekend. After knocking off International 80-26 on Friday, Linden hosted Division II power DeSales on Saturday, defeating them 61-56. Walker is averaging 26 points per game in the four games we have on record.
  3. Devin Royal, Pickerington Central: There's not much left unsaid about Devin Royal's play to start the season, but yet another strong week of play earns him a spot on this list. Royal helped lead the Tigers to 3-0 last week, averaging just shy of 22 points per game in the contests. More big offers are on the way for the 6-foot-7 junior.

Two Storylines to Watch

  1. As mentioned above, Newark Catholic working back into the fold after a state championship appearance will be interesting to watch. Having a reliable scorer like Cole Canter on their side, the Green Wave will continue to be a force to reckoned with, especially in Division IV
  2. Staying outside of Franklin County, Centerburg's hot start and rise through the ranks in Division III will be interesting to watch. A big week looms ahead for the Trojans, who host Danville on Tuesday and head to Northmor on Friday. Their first meeting with East Knox won't come until after the first of the year, but there's plenty of challenges ahead before that.

One Last Thought

A loaded schedule looms ahead on Sunday at Capital, with five high-quality games starting at 1:30 PM will make for an entertaining bonus day of basketball. The game of the day will arguably be St. Ignatius versus Gahanna, and could possibly be a rematch in the Final Four come March as well, if the brackets hold according to last year's form.
