Taking a look at some of the top performers from five games of action at Pickerington Central on Saturday

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Our staff had a chance to check out five games of action at Pickerington Central on Saturday for the Tiger Roundball Classic, getting a look at a handful of local teams in some exciting games.

The results of the games were as follows:

  • Grandview 75, Liberty Union 57
  • Reynoldsburg 59, Bishop Watterson 55
  • Trotwood Madison 87, Olentangy Liberty 75
  • Newark Catholic 63, Sheridan 61
  • Pickerington Central 73, Dayton Dunbar 53

There were several big time scoring performances throughout the event to go along with a handful of other impactful performances, so let's take a look at some of the top performers below.

Devin Royal (6'5 WF / Pickerington Central / 2023): Turning in yet another dominant performance on Saturday night, Royal led all scorers with 25 points in Pickerington Central's blowout win over Dayton Dunbar. We were glad to see Royal showing off his perimeter skillset in the contest as he knocked down two mid-range jumpers off the dribble and hit a stepback three from the wing to go along with four powerful dunks and a handful of other scores on the interior. There isn't much left to say about Royal that we have not already said as the junior continues to prove again and again why he is worthy of all the praise that he has been receiving. You will be hard pressed to find a more efficient and versatile scorer than Royal as he truly has an elite skillset at 6-foot-5.

Cooper Davis (6'4 WG / Olentangy Liberty / 2022): Davis turned in a big-time scoring performance in Olentangy Liberty's loss to Trotwood, using the Rams up tempo style of play to his advantage. The Toledo commit was automatic from beyond the arc in the first half, nailing five catch-and-shoot triples to come up with 27 of his 35 points in the first half. Davis also got to the foul line and handful of times and went 10-for-11 from the stripe. The senior wing showed off his improved athleticism on a big time one-handed dunk while driving baseline and also scored on the interior a handful of times. Davis is really tough to slow down when he catches fire and despite not picking up a win, that was certainly the case on Saturday.

Cole Canter (6'3 PG / Newark Catholic / 2022): Fresh off leading Newark Catholic to a state championship appearance as the quarterback of the football team, Canter poured in 24 points to help lead the Green Wave to an impressive win over Sheridan to open up their season. Canter is a really intriguing small school prospect as he offers great size at the guard spot and can score it in a handful of ways. Canter hit a tough mid-range jumper off the dribble, nailed a handful of three's and got to the rim for a few scores as well. We like the pace that the senior guard plays with as he never seems to speed things up or force anything, allowing him to score at a pretty efficient rate. Canter provided the Green Wave with some big time plays in the second half and looked to be in basketball shape despite not being allowed to practice until this week because of football. We expect Newark Catholic to be a force in Division IV this season and a lot of that will have to do with the play of Canter.

Tre Holliman (5'9 PG / Grandview / 2023): Holliman got the day started with a huge performance as the junior guard dropped a career-high 30 points in Grandview's win over Liberty Union. Before catching fire and hitting four three's in the second half, the 5-foot-9 guard also got to the rim for some impressive finishes in the contest. Holliman has a good handle and seems to understand the game well as he broke down defenders on multiple occasions and got by them to finish inside, showing off his ability to finish through contact with both hands in the contest. Saturday's performance from Holliman was the best we have seen him play and we are excited to see if he can help lead Grandview back to another district title as their backcourt trio of him, Aiden Leslie and Danny Claypool impressed us yesterday.

Cole Rhett (6'6 C / Bishop Watterson / 2023): Rhett did all he could to help lead Bishop Watterson to a comeback win over Reynoldsburg on Saturday, dropping 22 points in a close loss. Rhett was dominant on the interior for spurts of the game as Reynoldsburg simply had no matchup for his size inside. The 6-foot-6 junior was a force in the post, bullying defenders underneath the rim and finishing with both hands at an efficient rate. Rhett has a really good touch near the rim and plays with a lot of energy as we were pleased to see the motor that he played with on Saturday. Not many teams in the area have a matchup for the junior's size and as he continues to improve, he is only becoming more of a matchup problem on the interior.

Julian Heckman (6'0 G / Reynoldsburg / 2022): Heckman provided Reynoldsburg with some much needed scoring in their win over Bishop Watterson as the senior guard was named MVP of the game after a 22 point outing. Heckman really caught fire in the second quarter, knocking down three of his five triples on the day in the frame. Outside of showing off his shooting touch from the perimeter, Heckman also had a couple of impressive finishes inside around the length of Rhett. The 6-foot senior came up with a couple of big steals in the game and also created opportunities for his teammates at times. Heckman has been a consistent scoring option for the Raiders this season and Saturday was no different as he led them to another impressive win.

Jordan Fisher (6'6 WG / Reynoldsburg / 2025): Fisher is a freshman to really keep an eye on moving forward. Coming off the bench on Saturday, the 6-foot-6 wing provided Reynoldsburg with 18 points and operated very efficiently. Fisher did not force anything and did a really good job of playing within Reynoldsburg's offense, allowing him to generate some open looks that he knocked down. Fisher converted an and-one on the block, nailed a three from the top of the key, hit a couple of mid-range jumpers and went 5-for-5 at the free throw line. With great length and size to go along with an impressive skillset, the freshman is going to be an intriguing prospect in the class of 2025. We are really excited to follow Fisher of the next several years as he is just one key piece of Reynoldsburg's plethora of young talent.

Danny Claypool (5'8 PG / Grandview / 2023): We were really impressed with the performance that Claypool put together in Grandview's win over Liberty Union. The 5-foot-8 guard did a really good job of running Grandview's offense at the guard spot as he scored it in multiples ways and also dropped a handful of dimes to open teammates. A player that we were not too familiar with heading into Saturday's, Claypool will be a key piece for Grandview this season as they look to remain amongst the best in Division IV. He has a great understanding of the game at the guard spot, shoots it well and also is capable of getting inside and finishing near the rim. The Bobcats have a really good pair of 2023 guards in Holliman and Claypool.

Kalib Riddle (6'4 F / Liberty Union / 2022): Riddle was a bright spot for Liberty Union in their loss on Saturday as he led the team with 24 points in the contest. While he did most of his scoring on the interior, the senior also showed off his ability to shoot it by knocking down three triples in the contest. Riddle used his size to get inside and finish a handful of times against a Grandview team that doesn't have a ton of size. The 6-foot-4 forward will have to continue putting up big number for Liberty Union as they seek to remain in contention in the MSL-Buckeye despite graduating some talent from last year's roster.

Josh Harlan (5'11 G / Pickerington Central / 2022): We were impressed with Harlan's performance on Saturday night as the senior guard seems to be getting back into basketball shape after Pickerington Central made a deep postseason football run that he was a key part of. Harlan had a couple of driving scores, nailed a catch-and-shoot three, scored a second chance bucket and also played a key role for Pickerington Central on the defensive end. Harlan is a true competitor with a ton of experience as he has been a key player for the Tigers since his sophomore season. As his performance continues to rise, Pickerington Central only becomes more deadly as he plays a big role on both ends of the floor.

Tristan Gorius (6'0 G / Newark Catholic / 2022): Gorius impressed us in Newark Catholic's win over Sheridan, hitting some big shots for the Green Wave in the second half and finishing with 17 points in the contest. Gorius is a strong guard at 6-foot as he used his size to get to the rim for a couple of tough finishes in the contest. He also showed off a consistent shooting stroke as he buried two triples in the second half as well. In Division IV, it is extremely important to have key role players around your best guy and Newark Catholic has exactly that in Gorius and Brandon Buchanan.
