DeSales powers over Hartley in a big CCL win at home

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Friday night’s showdown was expected to be your traditional hard-nosed defense and low scoring game in the CCL. However, DeSales (2-1) was much more consistent on offense which gave them the advantage in a 55-38 win at home against Bishop Hartley (1-3).

For almost the entire game, both teams ran a full court press to disrupt the flow of offense. DeSales had the upper hand on the court with having three seniors in their starting lineup while Hartley had two freshmen in their starting lineup.

The Stallions started the game hot, but it almost seemed like there was response for each basket in the first quarter. The momentum shifted between each team for the remainder of the first half and the Stallions finished with an early 23-17 lead. The defensive pressure did not stop in the second half, but the length and size of DeSales was too much for Hartley come close to for a win.

DeSales dominated the box score with senior Atticus Schuler leading the way with 21 points, followed by Cruz Sanchez with 8 points. Most of Hartley’s scoring came from senior Amari Gaston who finished with 18 and Jacob Thomas who finished with 9 points.

This performance from the Stallions last night was very encouraging for the program and what they are capable of this year. It would’ve been very easy to count them out after the departure of Des Watson, but the identity of the program can build on last season’s run to the state championship. Schuler is one of the most skilled offensive threats in the area and Sanchez is a solid prospect that play at the next level. They also have a very good freshman in PJ Noles, who has a lot of talent and an excellent feel for the game.

Let's take a look at the best prospects from Friday’s game.

Atticus Schuler (6’7 WF / DeSales / 2022): Atticus Schuler is any team’s nightmare. At 6-foot-7, he is an excellent three level scorer with an offensive skill set that is high level. His performance on Friday showed us that he is not afraid to attack offensively, and his lengthy frame is a great tool for defense. This season in just three games, he’s averaged 16 points per game and has been terrific for the Stallions. Schuler is simply a scholarship athlete that can play at the next level.

Cruz Sanchez (6'7 F / DeSales / 2022): Sanchez is an intriguing prospect. Following his older brother Caden Sanchez’s footsteps, he mirrors and has a lot of the same skills. His motor on both ends of the floor was impressive last season during the state tournament and we saw that again last night. His lengthy frame allows for him to be a great shot blocker, rebounder and his footwork in the post is amazing to watch. With Sanchez and Schuler on the court, it is very tough to get into a rhythm with these guys guarding you.

PJ Noles (6'2 G / DeSales / 2025):  Last night was his debut in a Stallions uniform and he came off the bench providing huge minutes and instant impact. He is a play-maker with an offensive game that is very fitting for the next level already. He sees the floor very well and makes the right plays accordingly. We are very excited to see how he improves as he is arguably one of the best 2025 guards in central Ohio.

Amari Gaston (6'3 WF / Bishop Hartley / 2022): Gaston is a very smooth guard. He was certainly the go-to player for the hawks, and he did not disappoint at all as he finished with 18 points last night. He is a lefty that you cannot leave open in any setting. He is an excellent catch and shooter, can create off the dribble, and is very quick in transition. He will be a big-time scorer for Bishop Hartley this season and we expect for Division III programs to take a look at him.
