Bishop Watterson outlasted Upper Arlington in overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It required extra time but Bishop Watterson put together their best four offensive minutes to take down Upper Arlington by a score of 38-32 in overtime Tuesday night.

Upper Arlington started the first quarter on fire, knocking down three quick three pointers giving themselves a four point lead. Two free throws from senior Alexa Machol and a basket from senior Kylie Graham tied the game at 11 heading into the second quarter.

The shooting cooled off dramatically in the second with both teams only scoring seven points a piece. UA started the quarter on a 7-0 run before Watterson jumped on a 7-0 run themselves. The score was tied at 18 after two quarters.

The third period was an offensive struggle for both teams. Eagle junior Sydney Spears tallied all four points for BW in the period. Sophomore Quinn Buttermore connected for three and junior Ceylone Brooks completed an old-fashioned three point play to give the Golden Bears a 24-22 lead heading into the final frame.

After a back and forth fourth quarter, Upper Arlington maintained possession with 1:20 left in the game. They managed to burn just over a minute off the clock before Watterson started to foul. While attempting to get a shot off, UA turned the ball over with two and a half seconds left. Watterson was unable to get a shot off with the limited time remaining and the game headed to overtime tied at 28.

The Eagles exploded for eight straight points in overtime including baskets from Graham, Ryan and Spears and two free throws from freshman Sophie Ziel. Brooks refused to quit in overtime. In the last 30 seconds, she rattled off four straight points, stopping the Eagle run and cutting the lead to four. This effort proved to be too little, too late for UA as Watterson was able to run out the clock.

Spears paced the Eagles in the win with 10 and was supported by Graham with eight and senior Kenna Ryan and Ziel with seven each. Brooks led UA with 12 and Buttermore added ten.

Let's take a look at Tuesday's top performers!

Kylie Graham (F / Bishop Watterson / 2022) - Graham, a Charleston commit, had the largest impact on the game as any player Tuesday. Her length altered a large number of shots and she had close to a double double with blocks and rebounds alone. She drew double and triple teams the whole night and struggled a bit to finish through contact. With the emergence of Spears as a solid second post, Graham will draw less attention and begin to dominate teams.

Sophie Ziel (PG / Bishop Watterson / 2025) - Ziel is one of the best freshmen in the area. She constantly has the ball on a string, passes equally well with both hands, has a beautiful long distance shot and makes her teammates better. She already displayed that she has ice in her veins by hitting four key free throws in overtime to seal the win for the Eagles. Expect big things out of Ziel in the next four years.

Sydney Spears (F / Bishop Watterson / 2023) - Spears was the most consistent offensive threat on the floor for the Eagles Tuesday. She played major clean up duty on the offensive boards leading to several buckets. She demands attention inside fifteen feet and is the perfect duo with Graham. She is a great defender and is another shot alterer inside.

Quinn Buttermore (5’2 PG / Upper Arlington / 2024) - Buttermore carried the majority ball handling duties for the Golden Bears Tuesday and the sophomore fared very well. She is a tenacious defender and has a high motor. She was the most consistent shooter for UA against Watterson and had a hand in the majority of their scoring. She also had some nice passes in the pick and roll. She plays much larger than her size and could soon be the center of this Upper Arlington squad.

Ceylone Brooks (5’7 G / Upper Arlington / 2023) - Brooks carried the offensive burden for the Golden Bears on Tuesday night. She has a great motor and never quit attitude as displayed by her individual 4-0 run while down eight in overtime. She has a beautiful shot from three and isn't afraid to attack the basket. Brooks could be a huge difference maker with a little more ball control and slightly better shot selection. We look for her to make a big impact as the season goes on.
