Ajay Sheldon's 29 points helped Dublin Coffman to a big win

DUBLIN, Ohio -- Friday's OCC-Central matchup was a game that consisted of multiple runs from both teams, but it still favored one team over the other. After scoring the first basket of the game, Olentangy Liberty (0-3) trailed Coffman (1-1) the entire game.

Even after a strong start from Liberty during the second half, it was not enough to stop Coffman in ending the game with a 58-47 win at home.

The Patriots were able to trim the deficit to as close as four points, however, Liberty would not get any closer than that. The size matchup between both teams were very similar so it appeared that prior to tip-off, it could’ve been anyone’s game. Coffman’s shot creation and playmaking was more consistent throughout the game which played a large role in securing the win.

Much of Dublin Coffman’s scoring came from the backcourt duo of Ajay Sheldon and Aiden Schmidt who both combined for a total of 40 points. While, on the other hand, Olentangy Liberty’s scoring was led by seniors Parker Hinkle with 12 points, and Toledo commit, Cooper Davis with 11.

The Rocks had a major advantage on the perimeter which was led through the offensive prowess of Schmidt and Sheldon. Both guards were able to create matchup issues as they took many defenders off the dribble for easy finishes at the rim. In just two games so far this season, Dublin Coffman seems to make their lack of interior size work to their advantage offensively. After a tough loss to Westerville South, it seems like they can make a good run with almost any team in the OCC-Central.

Dublin Coffman will look to gain a second league win next Friday Dec. 10 at Olentangy Orange. The Patriots will look to get their first win of the season at home against Upper Arlington (2-0).

Let's take a look at the best prospects from Friday’s game.

Ajay Sheldon (6’1 PG / Dublin Coffman / 2022): Sheldon was simply the best player in the gym without a question. He got to do whatever he wanted all game long. Among all the skills he possesses, the most impressive feature that may not get talked about as much is his playmaking and defense. He made a lot of great passes and decisions with the basketball that created opportunities for teammates. Defensively, he finished with five steals, but he probably created many more turnovers for Liberty the entire game. The Ohio University signee appears to be ready for a big senior season and should be among some of the top players in ballot for OCC player of the year.

Aiden Schmidt (6'3 SG / Dublin Coffman / 2023): This young man is a sleeper prospect. He is one of those players who does everything for you on the court. When you need him on defense, he will defend and when you need him offensively, he will give you just that. Schmidt also plays an excellent “Robin" role to Sheldon on the basketball court. He impacted the game in numerous ways, but his three-point shooting was efficient in catch and shoot scenarios. Similar to Sheldon, he appears to be a guy that has the ability to heat up, take over a game, knock down shots and make big plays. Colleges should be on the lookout for him as he is expected to have a big season this year.

Parker Hinkle (6'1 G / Olentangy Liberty / 2022): Hinkle is a spark plug. During the first half of the ball game, it seemed like the scoring load was going to be left for senior Cooper Davis. However, Parker Hinkle arrived at the scene with back-to-back three pointers, scores, and excellent defense to bring the game as close as possible. Though his efforts were not enough to get a win, he was fun to watch and will be one of many players that will help Davis offensively this season. The younger brother of the best point guard in Olentangy Liberty history, Hinkle may not have the same play style of his flashy older brother Henry, however, he is a productive player who impacts the game in every way.

James Hummell (6'1 G / Olentangy Liberty / 2023): Hummell was another player who brought a ton of energy during the second half of the ball game. Coming off the bench, he provided solid minutes in doing just about everything to keep Liberty in the game. He has a high motor and energy that is contagious for opposing teams. With a long season ahead, Liberty will greatly need his impact especially in close ball games because he’s a guy you need on the floor.
