Tough defense helps Johnstown top Heath for LCL win

JOHNSTOWN, Ohio -- It was a game of runs and a second half run by Johnstown was the last nail in the coffin for Heath. The defensive pressure and subsequent turnovers by the Bulldogs pushed the Johnnies to a 39-25 victory.

The first half proved to be a challenge for both teams. The Johnnies hit two quick threes and held the Bulldogs scoreless until just over three minutes left in the first quarter. This kicked off their 10-0 run. Johnstown closed out the frame with a 6-4 lead.

Heath continued their run until 3:57 left in the second quarter when senior Lily Scarberry connected for two for Johnstown. Three straight points at the end of the quarter by freshman Kylie Sharp propelled the Johnnies into the lead for good. They entered halftime with an 11-10 margin.

The strong defensive effort by the Johnnies in the third quarter proved to be the difference in the game. Using a 1-3-1 zone with Sharp on top, they held the Bulldogs to just five points in the frame which included a buzzer beater by sophomore Caroline Robertson.

Sophomore Abigail Adkins finally came alive after being held scoreless in the first half. She rattled off seven points in the quarter, helping increase Johnstown’s lead to seven points headed into the fourth by a score of 22-15.

The Johnnies continued their domination in the fourth quarter thanks to a 13-2 run highlighted by Adkins, Sharp and senior Brooke Barb.

In the win, Johnstown was led by Adkins with 13 and senior Brooke Barb with 12. Robertson paced Heath with eight followed by junior Taliyah Holmes with six.

Let’s take a look at some of Friday’s top performers:

Abigail Adkins (5’9 PG / Johnstown / 2024) - Adkins busted onto the scene during her freshman season and it appears she has picked up right where she left off. After a scoreless first half, Adkins settled in, her shot selection improved and she was making unbelievable passes. She has great court vision, has the ball on a string and can score at multiple levels. As the season goes on, we expect to see a bit more consistency in her shot, especially from three. Adkins is a competitor and a difference maker.

Kylie Sharp (6’1 F / Johnstown / 2025) - Sharp can play. This was our first look at the 6’1 freshman who boasts a wingspan of at least 6’3. She can handle the ball the full length of the court, play and score with her back to the basket, and connect from three. The most impressive parts of her game are her shot altering ability and her consistency on the boards. She reeled in several rebounds that most players wouldn't have gotten their hands on. It will take a little more varsity action for her to adjust to the physicality of the game but based on what we saw, Sharp has a bright, bright future.

Brooke Barb (5’11 G / Johnstown /2022) - Barb was one of the most consistent players for the Johnnies Friday night. She displayed good lateral movement on the defensive end and deflected many passes. She runs the floor well and isn't afraid to handle the ball. She was most impactful from three, hitting two Friday. Her length and shooting ability could make her a valuable asset at the next level with the right fit.

Taliyah Holmes (5’7 G / Heath / 2023) - Holmes didn't have her best game on Friday but we noticed some good trends. She has a quick first step that allows her to get to the rim. She isn't afraid of contact or the length of bigs. Holmes has a smooth three point shot but is lacking a bit of consistency. You can find her all over the floor on defense, making an impact anywhere she can. With a little polishing of her offensive game, she could be a great player.
