Big second-half run pushes Raiders past Wildcats

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Controlling a team is hard to do when all five players finish in double figures, but Westerville South was up for the challenge Tuesday. The Wildcats had their chances, but the game slipped away late in the third as Reynoldsburg used a 12-0 run to extend the lead out of reach en route to a 76-50 win.

Senior Imarianah Russell knocked down a three to start the game for the Raiders but quickly picked up two fouls and headed  to the bench while Reynoldsburg maintained a slim 6-5 lead.

Senior Mya Perry carried the weight after Russell’s departure as the Ohio State-commit scored 12 points in the first quarter, helping give Reynoldsburg 19-11 lead after one..

Two three-pointers by junior Tamara Ortiz kept Westerville South close in the second. Reynoldsburg extended their lead to 13, but the Wildcats scored five straight points to end the quarter, closing the gap to 33-25 at halftime..

After a back-and-forth third quarter highlighted by three triples from junior Leila Jones, things started going south for the Wildcats. Reynoldsburg ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 53-39 headed into the final frame.

The Raiders picked up right where they left off in the third, extending their run to 12-0 before Ortiz connected on a layup, but the damage had been done.

Perry paced the Raiders with 24 followed by Russell, Sam Savoy and Makiya Miller with 13 each, and Trinity Ramos with 10. Westerville South was led by Jones with 21 and Ortiz with 15.

Let's take a look at the top performers from the game.

Mya Perry (5’11 G / Reynoldsburg / 2022): The Ohio State commit continued her offensive domination, scoring 24 in Tuesday’s contest. She is deadly from three and is finishing well at the rim through contact. If she, Trinity Ramos and Makiya Miller can continue to shoot this consistently, the Raiders will be VERY hard to beat.

Leila Jones (5’8 G / Westerville South / 2023): Jones, an Akron commit, was the primary scorer for the Wildcats. She scored in a variety of ways, including four three pointers. Jones has stepped up her game on the defensive end and made many impact plays..

Sam Savoy (5’11 F / Reynoldsburg / 2023): Savoy is a game changer for the Raiders. She is a monster on the offensive boards which is where she scores the majority of her points. The junior is versatile on the defensive end, defending guards and posts. And she isn’t afraid to bring the ball up the court. She is a great threat inside for Reynoldsburg.

Neveah Brownlee (5’7 G / Westerville South / 2023): Brownlee comes off the bench for the Wildcats but makes a massive impact. She is athletic, has a high motor, has a quick first step, and can handle the ball. The junior was a contributor mostly on the defensive end but if she can become more consistent on the offensive end, she will have an even larger presence.
