GAHANNA, Ohio -- The firepower of No.1 Gahanna proved to be far too much as the Lions defeated No. 10 Reynoldsburg 77-41 to capture their first district title in the Sean Jones era.
Gahanna advances to the regional semifinals where they will face the winner of No. 5 Olentangy Liberty and No. 13 Newark on Thursday, March 11 at 6 p.m. at Ohio Dominican University.
The trio of Jones (21), Javan Simmons (16), and Maceo Williams (15) was dominant from tip-off all the way to the final buzzer as they combined for 52 points in the victory. Not only did they put on a show offensively, but the entire Lions squad played suffocating team defense that prevented Reynoldsburg from ever getting into a rhythm.
This was the second meeting this season between the two teams. Gahanna won the first battle 64-50 in early February in a relatively competitive game. This afternoon was very different however as the Lions rolled and Reynoldsburg has no answer.
Gahanna jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first three and a half minutes by shooting 4-for-5 from the field. Eljae Deas and Jones triples, as well as a Williams mid range jumper and a powerful dunk from Simmons catapulted the Lions out ahead.
The Lions led 24-7 after the first quarter and jumped even further ahead in the second quarter, carrying a 42-16 lead into the locker room. The second half was more of the same as Gahanna continued their success on both ends of the floor.
Reynoldsburg settled in and played a much better second half, however it was far too late for any comeback. The Lions still outscored the Raiders 35-25 in the second half and Gahanna was able to coast into cutting the nets down post game.
Congratulations to Reynoldsburg on their great season and best wishes to their graduating seniors, Nrique Love, Davion Pirtle, Zaveon Croff, and Josiah Mobley.
