Cole Canter explodes for 37 points to lead the Green Wave to a blowout win

NEWARK, Ohio -- The Newark Catholic Green Wave defeated the Berne Union Rockets 72-46 on Friday night to become Division IV district champions for the first time since 2012.

Newark Catholic had a plan in place to make every basket difficult for Berne Unions duo of senior Brock Unger and junior Brae Friesner, which forced the rest of the team to make shots. They executed this plan by running a triangle and two or a box and one defense depending on who was on the court.

At the beginning of the first frame, juniors Cole Canter of Newark Catholic and Friesner of Berne Union went back and forth, scoring every point for their teams. The Green Wave’s junior duo of Canter and Tristan Gorius drained a combined five three pointers to get out to a 19-14 lead after one quarter.

Berne Union junior Sammy Amnah got the second period started out right with a three pointer, but Canter was then scored five straight points on a fast break layup and triple to extend the Green Wave lead to eight.

Newark Catholic sophomore Kyle Langenbrunner and Berne Union’s Friesner traded three pointers followed by an and-one from senior Colin Crumrine to give the Green Wave a 35-27 halftime lead.

Newark Catholic threw a haymaker at Berne Union by winning the third quarter 24-4, which all but sealed the victory. Canter put on a show during this quarter for the Green Wave, scoring 16 points on four triples, which extended their lead to 29.

Once they secured the lead, they never looked back. Newark Catholic shot the lights out on Friday, draining 14 three pointers as a team. Look for Berne Union to have their minds set on getting back to this point next season, as they are on the rise as a program, making it to the district finals in three straight seasons.

Canter led the way for Newark Catholic with a season high 37 points on nine three pointers. College coaches should keep an eye on Canter, as he is a long, lengthy scorer and just continues to improve his game each and every time we see him! Gorius also added 13 points, while sophomores Joe Stanley and Langenbrunner combined for 12 assists for the Green Wave.

Sophomore Nate Nemeth led the way with 11 points for the Rockets, while Unger pitched in 10 points and a team high five rebounds. Friesner also contributed eight points all in the first half.

Newark Catholic advances to the regional semifinals to take on the winner of Botkins and Perry next Tues., March 9 at 5:30 at Vandalia Butler High School.
