Lady Tigers stifle Watterson in second-half, Sweet 16 bound for sixth straight year

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The phrase 'defense wins championships' may be cliché but it is a pretty good mantra for what happened on Cooke Road on Saturday afternoon. Holding Watterson scoreless for eight-plus minutes, Pickerington Central was able to nab a sixth straight district championship by knocking off the Eagles 48-28. Berry Wallace scored a game-high 17 points and Madison Greene added in 14 as the Tigers won on the road in convincing fashion.

Greene was the catalyst of the big run that turned the tide, hitting a pull up 35-footer as time expired in the first half to give the Tigers the lead for good. Pickerington Central held Watterson scoreless for the next six-plus minutes in the third quarter as well, pushing the lead to 30-18 on the heels of a 14-0 run.

Led by Danielle Grimm, the Eagles fought back as best they could, putting together a 6-0 run to close the third quarter and trim the deficit to just two possessions. Grimm finished her final game at Watterson with a team-high 13 points, giving the Eagles all the energy she had.

Watterson did start the game on a roll, giving the Lady Tigers some trouble from beyond the arc, leading 13-10 after the opening frame. But defense ruled the day as Pickerington Central gave up just 15 points in the final 24 minutes of action.

Pickerington Central will now get a rematch with Newark on Wednesday night at Ohio Dominican, a third chance to knock off the Wildcats after losing both regular-season matchups. Newark won on the road Dec. 19 41-34, and then at home on Jan 22. by a count of 48-36.

With head coach Sam Davis back in the fold at Watterson, his Lady Eagles squad went 12-4 with a CCL title to boot.
