The Blue Aces suffocating defense was too much for Jonathan Alder

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Granville left no doubts in a dominating 51-20 victory in their district final matchup against Jonathan Alder Saturday afternoon.

Senior Cate Schieber drained a three to kick off Granville’s 16-0 run to start the first quarter. The Blue Aces suffocating pressure defense was too much for Jonathan Alder to handle and they struggled to get the ball across halfcourt.

Granville continued their offensive outburst and went into the second quarter with a comfortable 23-4 lead. Senior Lainie Hilaman was a nightmare on both ends of the floor, forcing many turnovers leading to nine points.

Senior Emma Shepherd connected for two to start the quarter for Jonathan Alder but the Blue Aces refused to waver. Granville went on a 17-0 run before Alder junior Mary Ferrito drained a three pointer. At the half, Granville touted a 40-9 lead.

The second half of the game was a bit faster due to the running clock but Junior Ella Wigal was able to make her mark for the Blue Aces. She sank a three and two free throws en route to a 47-12 lead headed into the final frame.

In the fourth, juniors Ellie Heisler and Mary Ferrito and senior Emma Shepherd tallied eight points for Alder but the deficit was too much to overcome. Alder outscored Granville 8-4 in the final frame.

Granville featured a balanced scoring attack seeing nine different players score. They were led by Schieber with 13, Wigal with 11, and Hilaman with 10. Shepherd led the Pioneers with 7.

Granville moves on to the regional semifinal to face the winner of Norton and Akron St. Vincent St. Mary on Tues., March 2 at 8:00 pm at Mansfield Senior High School.
