Marysville senior guard Jack Christian broke an all-time scoring record that stood since 1956

MARYSVILLE, Ohio -- When Ed Nicol graduated from Marysville High School in 1956, he left as the program's all-time leading scorer and the key cog of the Monarchs' last district title team.

It may have taken 65 years, but Nicol's 1208 career points have finally been surpassed, as Marysville senior Jack Christian broke the program's long held scoring record in a 55-44 win over North Union on Saturday.

Christian entered the game with 1202 points and broke the record on a backdoor cut late in the fourth quarter which gave him eight points on the night and most importantly, the all-time record. The senior has been a four-year starter for the Monarchs, averaging double figures all four seasons and making an instant splash when he went for 32 points in a win over Westland in just his 11th game of his career on Jan. 19, 2018.

Since then, Christian has been one of the most consistent players in the area, as the hard working guard has helped the Marysville program rise to new heights. With his work ethic leading the way, Christian has powered the Monarchs to back-to-back winning seasons including an OCC-Central title last season.

On Saturday, Christian had a tough time scoring the ball, as he was held to just eight points, however it was the play of the Marysville (11-7) front court that shined brightest against North Union (16-3).

Freshman Jason Moore and senior Garrett Taylor, both standing at 6-foot-7, combined for 26 points and were highly efficient all night long. Christian connected with Taylor twice for three-point field goals, while Moore had a few outstanding scores off the bounce which showed off the sky high potential that the freshman possesses.

For North Union, senior guard Preston Crabtree led with 13 points. The Wildcats hung tight for most of the game but could never take the lead as Marysville controlled from start to finish, avenging a road loss to the Wildcats in last year's meeting.

Marysville has been hot as of late, winning nine of their last 11 games with its only losses coming on the road to top teams Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne. The Monarchs could very well end the season unbeaten with two of its last three regular season games at home.

Christian and the Monarchs will open up tournament play at home on Tues., Feb. 23 against Groveport Madison.

For North Union, the defending Division III district runner ups will finish the regular season at home on Wednesday against Elgin before starting another promising run in the district tournament.
