Marysville picked up a great home win on Monday to keep its OCC title run alive

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Olentangy and Marysville met Monday night in a battle of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the OCC-Cardinal division.

In their first matchup, the Braves beat the Monarchs to take over first place in the division. Marysville avenged their previous loss with a 53-45 overtime win in Monday's matchup.

Olentangy’s offense was firing on all cylinders to start the game behind the hot hand of senior Kennedie Doup who drained three three pointers in the quarter. Marysville featured a balanced scoring attack with four Monarchs contributing but it was not enough to overcome the offensive firepower of Doup and senior Dani Beidelman. The Braves touted a 15-9 lead at the end of the first.

Marysville used a tough man-to-man pressure defense to hold Olentangy to just four points in the second quarter. Good defense led to good offense which allowed sophomore Ava Wilkerson to come alive for Marysville. She scored six of 10 points for the Monarchs in the quarter which was enough to tie the game headed into halftime.

To start the third, Olentangy jumped out to a three point lead thanks to another three pointer by Doup but sophomore Ava Krutowskis answered for Marysville. The teams traded baskets until sophomore Jonna Spohn drained a three pointer at the buzzer to give Olentangy a two point lead and momentum headed into the final quarter by a score of 32-30.

After a slow start, Wilkerson’s three provided the first basket in the quarter with just under six minutes left. After a back and forth couple of minutes, Krutowskis finished a smooth backdoor cut and lay-in to extend the Marysville lead to three points with under 40 seconds to go. Almost immediately, Doup drained a three pointer from the wing to tie the game for the Braves. Marysville had two opportunities to win but both attempts fell short and the game headed into overtime with a 37-37 score.

Marysville scored the first eight points of the overtime period and never looked back. Senior Meg Spohn connected on two three pointers and Doup drained two free throws to cut the lead to four but the effort was too little too late for the Braves.

The Monarchs went 12/12 from the free throw line to close out the period and secure the eight point win. Wilkerson tallied 19 and Krutowskis followed with 10. Doup led the Braves with 17 on five three pointers in the loss.

With the win, Marysville came on step closer to securing an OCC title. The Monarchs can clinch on Friday when they take on Olentangy Berlin.

Kennedie Doup (G / Olentangy / 2021) - Doup, an Otterbein commit, can flat out shoot. The senior knocked down five three pointers on Monday night which is not out of the ordinary. Earlier in January, she drained seven in a game. She is a major offensive threat for the Braves and will carry that to the next level at Otterbein. If Doup continues to shoot at this rate, Olentangy could be looking at a long tournament run.

Ava Wilkerson (G / Marysville / 2023) - Wilkerson is a young, promising guard for the Monarchs. She is an impact player with a high motor and lots of potential. She scores from all levels and is an excellent passer. The sophomore guard is a great perimeter defender who is constantly making plays and applying pressure. Wilkerson’s athleticism and skill are a big reason for Marysville’s success this season.
