Pioneers snag second straight CBC title in blowout fashion

PLAIN CITY, Ohio -- Jonathan Alder came into Monday’s CBC matchup looking for a second straight league title, and that’s exactly what they found as they dominated Kenton Ridge 64-27. The Pioneers were led by the fantastic guard duo of junior Mary Ferrito with 20 and freshman Evan Platfoot with 19.

Kenton Ridge started the game with a bang, jumping out to an 8-3 lead thanks to two threes by senior Joshlynn Johnson. Jonathan Alder overcame the deficit thanks to a couple of baskets by senior Emma Shepherd which propelled the Pioneers into the second quarter with a 13-8 lead.

Alder was all business to start the second, blanking Kenton Ridge 23-0 in the quarter. Ferrito and Platfoot were the major sparks for Jonathan Alder, scoring a combined 16 and assisting on a handful of baskets. The duo used their speed and defensive intensity to force turnovers which led to easy buckets for the Pioneers. Alder headed into halftime with a comfortable 36-8 lead.

Platfoot and Ferrito continued to dominate to start the third, scoring 13 while helping to hold Kenton Ridge to just eight points in the quarter. The Cougars saw offensive production from senior Tehya Avery who scored six points. Alder was able to extend their advantage and went into the final frame with a 51-16 lead.

Alder’s fourth quarter featured a balanced scoring attack from junior Natalie Heflin, seniors Avery Hecht and Maddie Wilson and Platfoot.

Mary Ferrito (G / Jonathan Alder / 2022) - If Ferrito isn't on your 2022 list, she should be. The guard made an impact on the defensive end of the floor every single play. She does not back down from guarding larger forwards, consistently tips and recovers passes and provides constant ball pressure. She finishes strong through contact, has a beautiful mid-range jumper (yes, you read that right!), and shoots a high percentage from three. One of her attributes that stood out most was her passing ability: the right pass, at the right time, every time. We look for Ferrito’s stock to continue to rise after a successful junior season and expected lengthy tournament run.

Megan Freeman (5’10 G / Kenton Ridge / 2021) - Freeman was a great competitor Monday for Kenton Ridge. The senior has a great motor and makes plays all over the floor. She is a consistent rebounder and is always trying to make plays. She handles the ball confidently but could use a little bit of polishing on her shot. Freeman is the clear leader of this Cougar squad.

Evan Platfoot (G / Jonathan Alder / 2024) - Platfoot is one of the most talented guards we have seen this season, regardless of class. The freshman has HUGE upside and will undoubtedly be one of the best guards in the state in her class. She handles the ball like a seasoned veteran, has a smooth, quick release shot from three, finishes consistently with both hands and has an extremely high motor. The one-two punch of Platfoot and Ferrito will be a difference maker for Alder in the tournament.
