Hartley’s 19-point second quarter propels them to win over Red Devils

COLUMBUS, Ohio --  On a cold day, the Hawks traveled to the Southfield area and took down Marion-Franklin 62-45, behind Will Miller’s 16 points.

An early 4-0 lead from the Red Devils was erased as DJ Donnell got a steal and lay up followed by a Will Miller three-pointer to get Hartley started on offense. Another Tito Glass bucket put the home team back on top until Hartley’s Nico Thomas sank a free throw to tie it midway through the first quarter. Back-to-back baskets from Dorsien Butler gave Marion-Franklin a 10-6 advantage after the first quarter.

The second quarter was a bit more uptempo as both teams got a little more active on the offensive end. It was the play of junior Amari Gaston and his nine points that gave the Hawks a 25-22 lead at halftime.

After the break, Hartley went on an immediate 8-0 run which was capped off by a free throw by Donnell. Once the Hawks went up by 12, Marion-Franklin chipped away at the lead and got back down by four before a Jacob Thomas score and free throw put Bishop Hartley up 39-32 going into the fourth.

Starting the final frame of action, Hartley worked the zone of Marion-Franklin and got four quick points to stretch the lead to 11, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Tito Glass led the Red Devils with 10 points, along with eight points from Macheo Brooks.

DJ Donnell (6’0 G / Bishop Hartley / 2021): He made plays for himself and his teammates the entire game, playing unselfishly while still getting his shot off. He was able to score nine points while also dishing out a handful of nice looking assists and pulling down numerous rebounds. Donnell also used his long arms to snag some steals, really stuffing the stat sheet against Marion-Franklin. DJ was the most consistent player on either team, letting the game come to him, although I would like to see him be a bit more aggressive because he has big time scoring capability.

Amari Gaston (6’3 G / Bishop Harley / 2022): His nine points in the second quarter was the catalyst for a 19-point explosion of a frame for the Hawks. The second quarter was the key for Hartley in taking and keeping the lead. He was amazing around the rim the entire game and even drained a three-pointer to put his range on display. Defensively, Gaston was really impressive using his length to bother the Red Devil offense and play the passing lanes well. This young man is a good way to measure how well his team plays as a whole, when he contributes at a high level the Hawks are tough to beat.

Will Miller (6’4 F / Bishop Hartley / 2021): The best shooter on the court, he knocked down four triples during the course of the game and showed real range on his shots. Miller also finished around the rim with a soft touch and had active hands on defense, coming up with a steal in the second quarter. The football standout is also a beast on the hardwood who plays with physicality and intelligence. Miller’s 16 points led the way for Bishop Hartley in that column and the intensity he played with helped fuel the victory.

Macheo Brooks (6’3 G / Marion-Franklin / 2021): He has good length and never quits on him, playing until the final horn and doing so with fearlessness. Brooks has good defensive awareness and put it on display with some nice steals in the passing lanes. One half of the twin duo for the Red Devils was also able to knock down a triple and let scouts know he can stretch a defense as well.
