Cade Norris erupts for a career-high 29 points in big win

HILLIARD, Ohio -- Before last Saturday, Hilliard Bradley had gone 356 days without a loss.  Since then, the Jaguars have lost twice in four days, which ended a five-year winning streak in OCC divisional play.

On Friday, Bradley got back to its winning ways and defeated cross-town rival Hilliard Davidson, 60-45.

Davidson, who entered the game on a four-game losing streak of their own, made for a competitive first half, led behind the duo of Jared Frey and Jayden Nervis.

The two juniors each accounted for 10 points in the first half, as they scored all but two of Davidson’s first half points.   Bradley went into halftime with a 26-22 lead.

After he delivered a quality first-half performance, Bradley’s Cade Norris exploded in the third.  The freshman scored 13 of his game-high 29 points from multiple areas on the court, and helped extend Bradley’s lead to double digits.

Bradley held the lead through the fourth and it was mostly due to their efficiency at the free throw line.  The Jaguars converted 13 of 18 shots at the charity stripe which prevented any chance of a Davidson comeback.

Cade wasn’t the only Norris that made a big impact Friday.  Older brother Keaton was right behind with 17 points, highlighted by three well-contested made triples.

Fellow senior guard AJ Mirgon had six points, but made his biggest impact with lockdown defense on Davidson, most notably his ability to keep the sharp-shooter Frey from scoring off the dribble.

While Bradley junior Peyton Murphy might not stuff the stat sheet, he also supplied high-level defense that deserves recognition. Murphy also created offense with a team-high three assists.

Murphy’s three personal assists would match Davidson’s team assist total.  The Wildcats struggled to get into any offensive rhythm and more often than not depended on Frey and Nervis to create their own points. Two of Davidson’s three assists came in the fourth on back-to-back identical plays when Frey attracted the Jaguars defense and found junior Ethan Ruhe under the basket for two easy scores.

Beyond that, the Wildcats received a bulk of their scoring either from Frey’s long-range shooting or Nervis’ natural ability to find the basket from all levels.

The Wildcats (3-5) will need to find more offensive production quickly as they have an overnight rematch against the Jaguars (10-2) on Saturday.

For Hilliard Bradley, it may be unrealistic to expect another five-year undefeated OCC streak, but their win Friday got them back in the right direction.

Cade Norris  (6'2 WF / Hilliard Bradley / 2024): A truly sensational performance for the freshman, the clear player of the game.  On Friday, Norris’ 29 points came in a variety of forms. We saw Norris attack the six-foot-six Nervis off the dribble and score through a variety of post moves.  Norris also converted in transition, even taking a steal and going coast to coast for a lay-up finish.  His ability to shoot was on display, as he made his only three-point attempt and went 8/11 at the free throw line. Even a bit undersized for his position, Norris grabbed multiple offensive rebounds, oftentimes scoring on the put back and drawing the foul. We’re telling you adamantly, buy Cade Norris stock right now.  When you factor in his family’s basketball pedigree and how he should continue to grow and physically develop, Norris will be a special player in Central Ohio the next three years.

Keaton Norris  (5'11 PG / Hilliard Bradley / 2021): Another efficient and quality performance from the Wright State commit, something we’ve grown to expect almost every game from Norris.  On Friday he was almost impossible to defend as the senior found his spots on the floor and also made multiple strongly-contested shots from beyond the arc. Norris’ defensive leadership and intensity helped prevent the Wildcats from getting into any offensive rhythm. A sound defender, rebounder and overall team leader, Norris is one of the most dependable lead guards you’ll find in Central Ohio.

Jayden Nervis  (6'6 WG / Hilliard Davidson / 2022): As we continue to become familiar with Nervis’ game, it’s becoming clear that the junior is a naturally gifted scorer.  Nervis put that ability on display again on Friday, with a team-high 19 points, scoring in transition, in the paint and twice beyond the arc.  He’s a crafty finisher that has long arms and athleticism that consistently stands out.  Nervis utilizes his size well off the glass, leading all players tonight with six rebounds, as he often out jumps everyone for the board.  While we think adding some strength can help Nervis on the defensive end, he is a prospect in the 2022 class worth keeping a serious eye on.

Jared Frey  (6'5 WG / Hilliard Davidson / 2022): One of the better shooters in Central Ohio, Frey’s range was shown Friday night as he scored 13 points.   The junior connected on three triples, including two pull-ups just outside the volleyball line. Although he didn’t have much success getting into the paint, Frey did a good job of not forcing his shot or turning the ball over.   Our biggest complaint is that Davidson wasn’t able to find Frey better scoring situations.  When in open space, he’s a serious threat to score.
