Khaleed Hudson's impressive performance off the bench helps Warriors start 1-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The wait is over! The Columbus City League is back, and Eastmoor Academy, led by Khaleed Hudson and his 18 points, four rebounds and three assists off the bench started the season right with a blowout win over Marion-Franklin. After a slow start, which is to be expected after such a long time off, the Warriors brushed it off and hammered the Red Devils 78-38.

Deon Thorpe and Marchel Brooks traded early baskets in route to a 4-4 tie, until Terrion Hale went on a personal 5-0 run. Turnovers and fouls from both teams fueled the rest of the first quarter as Eastmoor finished with a 16-9 lead.

The Warrior bench came in and kept the margin the same, as Khaleed Hudson’s five point and two steal effort made the difference before the half. Macheo Brooks took the scoring role from his twin brother and scored six in the quarter that was matched by Aaron Lawson. Lawson finished the game with 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

After halftime, the Warriors continued to apply pressure and open up the lead even wider. The Red Devils kept putting the ball in harm’s way and could not find the basket, being held to 10 total points in the third quarter while Eastmoor poured in 28. Include four free throws from Hudson after a personal and technical foul to set the lead at 58-31 going into the fourth quarter and effectively put the game away.

In a fourth quarter that saw Jim Miranda’s team score another 20 while holding coach Herman Brown’s bunch to seven that finished off Marion Franklin. Senior Macheo Brooks led the Red Devils with 10 points followed by Dorsin Butler with eight.

Khaleed Hudson (5’9 G / Eastmoor Academy / 2021): Coming off the bench, Hudson had a career night with 18 points while scoring in a myriad of ways. Hudson got some shots around the rim and showed a soft touch, he also knocked down a couple mid range jumpers and hit two three-point shots that completed his display of three level scoring ability. He also grabbed two steals that started some transition offense for his team. His scoring was the key to busting open the lead for Eastmoor, scoring 11 of his 18 in the third quarter. Hudson led a bench mob that was very impressive for the Warriors, one that could be the barometer for how good they will be.

Terrion Hale (5’9 G / Eastmoor Academy / 2023): The hardest working man on the court, whenever he walked off the court he was drenched in sweat and breathing heavy. His energy powered them through a slow half with eight big points that included a steal and two rebounds. He showed some range knocking down a three but he mainly made plays from the mid range and in. The sophomore was all over the place defensively as well, pressuring the ball as well as tracking the ball in the air like a seasoned player. Hale had an impressive opening outing, the Warriors hope he can keep this up for the remainder of the year.

Aaron Lawson (5’11 G / Eastmoor Academy/ 2022): Despite not scoring much early, Lawson still stuffed the stat sheet and almost notched a double-double in his first game of the season. His nine rebounds led the team, showing how well the starting guard for the Warriors can crash the glass. Lawson also hit a buzzer beating three before the end of the half, just three of his 11 on the night. The junior also had a team-high four assists and displayed good vision along with great anticipation on his passes. There were times his coaches got on him for various things but he kept his composure and showed some mental toughness with how well he played. This versatile guard will be a huge key to the success of Eastmoor Academy.

Dorsien Butler (6’0 G / Marion Franklin / 2021): While his eight points will not blow anyone away, his leadership was impressive. Butler was continuously talking on both ends of the court, trying to keep his team together. He took the role of coach on the court, getting his team into defensive sets and making sure players were where they needed to be. Butler showed nice touch around the rim and was good at closing out on shooters.
