Kievon Wiggins' game winner powers Rams to huge win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Tuesday night's non conference matchup offered a classic showdown between Whitehall (8-5) and Pickerington North (5-2).

The matchup was closely contested all night and needed an extra four minutes to decide the winner, as Kievon Wiggins' layup at the buzzer gave Whitehall a 53-51 win.

Casey George paced the way for the Panthers early on scoring eight points in the first quarter. For Whitehall, they had a balanced attack with four different guys scoring they trailed 13-12 at the end of one.

The second quarter was just as closely contested , George knocked down two more threes and just as the Panthers looked like they’d take a lead into the half, Whitehall's senior Wiggins drilled a contested three to give the Rams a 29-27 lead at the break.

Pickerington North started the third quarter on a quick 7-2 run. Their momentum would be short-lived though, as Whitehall ripped off a 12-3 run of their own behind eight points from senior guard Teddy Brown. Whitehall had the biggest lead of the game as they led 43-37 after three.

The fourth quarter and overtime had the feel of a game where whoever had the ball last would win. That held true after a missed jump shot from George was rebounded by Royal Sibley who fired a  Kevin Love-esque  outlet pass to Wiggins who finished a lay up just as time expired.

For Whitehall, Wiggins and Brown led the way with 15 points each. Wiggins continues a breakout senior season where he has been a consistent force finishing around the rim.

The win on Tuesday was Whitehall's fifth-straight and eighth in their last nine games. The Rams have been overtime darlings as of late, taking down Pickerington North, Trotwood Madison and Groveport all in OT in the span of six days.

For Pickerington North, George had a game high 20 points while Corey Hudson added 11.

Kievon Wiggins (6’3 G / Whitehall / 2021): The well built guard excels at getting downhill and is a nightmare for defenders to stay in front of. He didn’t have his best night but he made big plays when needed, as he made the shot to force overtime as well as the game winning shot. Wiggins has seen a lot of varsity time since his sophomore year and you can see that he’s better at understanding pace, whereas a younger him was more of a bull in a china shop. Now he picks and chooses his spots and when gets to the rim he’s in our opinion, the strongest finisher in the area. He’s also improved his shot and is comfortably taking and making three point shots. If he can get into a college program that develops his body, slims him down and makes him even stronger than he is already without lifting weights, Wiggins could be an absolute freak show in college. Don't sleep on this kid. He's done it at a high level against the best competition all season long.

Casey George (6’0 PG / Pickerington North / 2021): George showed off his ability to score it several different ways, as he was money on catch and shoot threes, knocking down three of them. He showed off some shot creation ability as he was able to beat  his man and finish at the rim. Defensively, he made a lot of plays as well taking a clutch charge and guarding the ball well all night. George will be a quality two-way lead guard at the next level.

Teddy Brown (5’10 G / Whitehall / 2021): The senior guard is an extension of the coach on the floor, as he held himself and his teammates accountable all night and was very vocal on both ends of the floor. He provided a huge spark on the offensive end where he’s a confident shot maker. He knocked down some catch and shoot shots and had a few finishes at the rim. With a high GPA and a motor that never stops, Brown should be a target for small college programs looking for a tough guard who has improved year after year.

Corey Hudson (6’0 G / Pickerington North / 2022): Hudson was the second leading scorer for the Panthers, but that’s not where he impressed. He showed off his value as a point of attack defender. The junior was an absolute menace defending the ball where he managed to force three five second closely guarded calls. His team fed off of his energy on that end of the floor all night long. On a team that is stock full of guards, Hudson has continued to elevate his game and is beginning to show value all over the floor.
