Bloom Caroll holds on to win a back-and-forth MSL battle

CARROLL, Ohio -- For the third year in a row Bloom-Carroll has defeated Fairfield Union on their home court. Tonight’s outcome was a thrilling victory in a back and forth contest that included many runs by both teams.

The Bulldogs (4-3) held on late in the game to defeat Fairfield Union (3-4) by a final score of 39-34. Bloom-Carroll’s balanced attack saw 5 players score six or more points, led by senior Ryan Williams with nine points.

Juniors Evan Dozier and Chase Alwood both contributed eight points in the victory. Rounding out the top scorers were Ayden Anderson and Joe Luckhaupt with six a piece.

Fairfield Union was led by senior guard and Malone commit Ryan Magill with 18 points. Magill had an excellent performance despite the loss which included three triples and a personal 10-0 run to get his team back into the game in the second half.

After a slow first half that saw Bloom-Carroll take a 23-14 lead into the locker room, the second half was much more interesting. The teams went back and forth on their own small runs before ultimately Bloom-Carroll came out on top.

Coming out of halftime, Magill went on a personal 10-0 run that gave Fairfield Union a 24-23 lead. Bloom-Carroll responded with their own 9-2 run, regaining the lead at the end of the third quarter, 32-26. A third consecutive run, this time 7-0 by the Falcons cut the Bloom-Carroll lead to just three with 3:12 remaining in the game.

The Bulldog defense locked in down the final stretch, not allowing another Fairfield Union field goal for the rest of the game. Despite missing the front end of three late one-and-ones, Bloom-Carroll hung on for the big league win.

Bloom-Carroll returns to action tomorrow night when they travel to New Lexington. Fairfield Union will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they host St. Charles.

Ryan Magill (6’4 G / Fairfield Union / 2021): The Malone commit had a great showing in Friday night’s loss. The six-foot-four senior had a game high 18 points where he displayed his scoring ability from every spot on the floor. Magill was efficient from behind the arc, finished well around the rim, and even hit some shots from the midrange. As a big guard who can handle the ball very well, he is hard to stop when he gets to his spots. He will rarely make a bad decision with the ball as well, as he displayed some patience tonight, taking time to get good shots.

Evan Dozer (6’2 G / Bloom-Carroll / 2022): Dozer had a big performance tonight that helped his team to the win. The six-foot-two guard was solid all around for the entirety of the game, providing his team with good offense and stellar defense. Dozer had a handful of strong takes to the rim where he finished up and through contact for the score. He had an impressive spin move late in the game that led to a much needed bucket. He also hit two big free throws late in the game when Bloom-Carroll needed to put it away. Strong all around performance from the junior guard.

Ryan Williams (6’3 WG / Bloom-Carroll / 2021): Williams led his team in scoring and had a very similar game to Dozer. The duo led their team with great performances on both ends of the floor that encapsulated the team victory. Williams played great defense throughout the night and came up with big shots in the first half. Two consecutive buckets in the second quarter from Williams catapulted his team into halftime with the lead that they would go on to keep. He finished well around the rim and even knocked down a contested corner three.
