Top-ranked Rockets fall to hot shooting Cadets

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In a rematch of last year’s regional semifinal, Fort Frye visited the number one Division IV team in the state, Berne Union. The Cadets held on to pull off the upset of the top-ranked Rockets 41-38.

Fort Frye started the game on fire from three, hitting two right off the bat. After that, Berne Union started to control the tempo using their intense defense and length. The Rockets went into halftime with a 22-18 lead after senior Bella Kline drilled a three at the buzzer.

The third quarter was dominated by three-point shooting on both ends of the floor. Senior Lexie Huck hitting two for the Cadets to take the lead and control of the game. Fort Frye boasted a 39-32 lead late in the fourth when Bella Kline drained two deep three pointers to cut the lead to one.

While the Rockets were able to get off multiple shots to try and take the lead or tie the game, they did not convert and were eventually forced to foul. Huck was able to seal the game for Fort Frye by connecting on two free throws. The Cadets forced multiple off balance three-pointers by Berne Union to run out the clock.

Sophia Kline (6’1 F / Berne Union / 2023): Kline continues to impress our staff as the season goes on. She is one of the best rebounders we have seen in the girls game. The sophomore is constantly fighting for position and when she doesn't have it, she utilizes her length to tip to teammates. Sophia is a great offensive threat but could be even better if she refines moves with her back to the basket.

Baylee Mirgon (5’11 F / Berne Union / 2023): Mirgon is becoming an important piece of the puzzle for Berne Union. She is athletic, lengthy and has no problem guarding the other team’s best player. She can shoot from three and would open up the floor for the Rockets if she could knock down one or two three point shots a game. She and Sophia Kline will be quite the one-two punch for Berne Union for the next couple of years.

Bella Kline (5’11 G / Berne Union / 2021): Kline showed off her impressive range towards the end of the game tonight. She definitely has the clutch gene, hitting two deep threes to cut the Fort Frye lead to one point. She has a smooth handle, is confident with the ball, and makes great basketball plays. Kline is a competitor that has a high motor. This unsigned senior could make a big impact on many next level programs.

Riley Medley (5’8 G / Fort Frye / 2023): Medley is a super quick, high motor guard who was a major leader for Fort Frye in the first half. Her buckets in the second quarter kept the Cadets in the game. She defends the perimeter extremely well and doesn't back down from a challenge. She has range from three but plays best when attacking the basket. Her stock will rise if she is able to become more consistent from three. Excited to see where this young sophomore goes.

Mackenzie Dalton (G / Fort Frye / 2022) - Dalton was a big spark for the Cadets in the second half. She brings a different level of defensive intensity against opposing guards, forcing her hand often. Dalton can shoot the three hitting two in important situations in the second half. She handles the ball with authority and has a high basketball IQ.
