NEWARK, Ohio -- In a LCL crossover thriller between the Northridge Vikings and the Licking Valley Panthers, the Vikings picked up a big win on the road on Wednesday, taking down the Panthers 50-48.

The contest was a back and forth defensive battle by both teams. Senior Adam Ulery got things started for Northridge by scoring their first six points of the game. Licking Valley answered Ulery’s hot start with a seven point quarter by senior Shawn Nethers off of the bench. Northridge ended the first quarter with a 12-11 lead.

After switching to a zone defense, the Vikings slowed down the up tempo Panthers team. They held them scoreless through the first three minutes of the second quarter. Junior Dillan Stewart tied the game at 20 with a buzzer beating triple going into halftime.

At the start of the third quarter, sophomores Ian Travis and Zach Holder got things started for the Vikings. Travis converted on a putback layup and Holder with an and-one conversion. The Panthers answered the Vikings strong start with a 10-2 run to end the third quarter with the game tied up at 33.

Northridge junior JD Miller had a strong series to start the final frame, which included a block and a rebound, leading to a fast break layup. Despite a strong series, junior Colby Stough answered with a three pointer to give the Panthers a one point lead with 5:12 left in the fourth quarter.

Back to back to back three pointers, two by the Vikings Miller and one by Panthers senior Zach Hersey tied the game at 43 heading into overtime.

Sophomore Justin Townley of Northridge and Stough of Licking Valley each traded baskets to start overtime. With the game tied, Travis broke Licking Valley's press, dishing to Holder to take the final lead of the game by a score of 50-48.

The Vikings were led by Miller with a team high 12 points and Ulery with a game high 13 rebounds. Travis filled up the stat sheet with nine points, four rebounds, and a team high four assists.

The Panthers were led by Nethers with a game high 13 points and four steals. Stough added a 10 point, 10 rebound double double, while Stewart pitched in nine points on three triples and a game high five assists.

Both teams are back in action against LCL opponents this week, when the Panthers (1-6) face the Zanesville Blue Devils (2-4) on Tuesday, and the Vikings (5-5) take on the Johnstown Johnnies (7-2) this Saturday.

Shawn Nethers (6’0 WG / Licking Valley / 2021): Nethers is a quick explosive guard who was instant offense for the Panthers early tonight. He showed great instincts on the press getting several steals. The leading scorer for Licking Valley on the season can score in a variety of different ways. He has good range hitting one three pointer tonight. Nethers showed the ability to score off the dribble, getting to the paint and finding ways to get the ball in the basket. The senior guard will need to continue to be a consistent scorer for the Panthers in order to be competitive in the LCL-Buckeye division Going forward.

Ian Travis (6’1 PG / Northridge / 2023): The sophomore guard has emerged as the floor leader for the Vikings. He has good length at the point guard position and was able to attack and finish at the basket. Travis showed good vision running the break, leading to a team high in assists. The most timely of his assists came as he broke down the Valley press to find a cutting teammate for the game winner in the final seconds of overtime. For a young player, he showed confidence and leadership at big moments in a very close competitive game.

JD Miller (6’1 WG / Northridge / 2022): Miller was clutch for the Vikings tonight. He saved it until late, but then went big. He scored all 10 Northridge points in the fourth quarter to help send the game to overtime. He finished with a team high 12 points, which included a pair of corner threes. He is a strong athletic guard who also played a big role locking down Licking Valley sharpshooter Dillan Stewart. The Vikings strength is their scoring balance, tonight the fourth quarter was “Miller Time”.
