Sophie Midura had 18 points to help Hayes fend off unbeaten Scioto

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Late free-throws were the difference in Tuesday’s OCC-Cardinal matchup Delaware Hayes and Dublin Scioto, as the Pacers defeated the Irish 53-48.

The first quarter featured slow starts for both teams. Alexis Amabile and Chloe Jeffers combined for 14 in the first for Hayes, while Scioto managed just seven points. Hayes saw increased production from Sophie Midura in the second quarter while Karleigh Rothe started to catch fire for the Irish, but the Pacers went into halftime with a 25-21 lead.

Karleigh and Ashleigh Rothe fueled the third quarter comeback for the Irish, tying the game with just over a minute and a half to go. After several turnovers and missed shots by Scioto, Amabile and Trinity Johnson were able to seal the game by going 9/10 from the free throw line in the last 1:20 of the game.

Amabile leads with 21 points. Midura added 18 points and Jeffers pitched in 11 points for Delaware Hayes. Hayes shot 19-for-29 at the line on Tuesday. Karleigh Rothe and Ashleigh Rothe combined for 27 points for Dublin Scioto. The Irish shot 17-for-29 at the line.

Sophie Midura (6'1 WF / Delaware Hayes / 2022): Midura is a lengthy, intriguing player for the Pacers. She has an extremely high motor, involving herself in so many aspects of the game. She rebounds well on both ends of the floor, isn't afraid to attack the basket and absorbs contact well. Midura shoots a decent percentage from three and is definitely an offensive threat for Hayes as she added 18 tonight. With her length and athleticism, we are excited to see how she can improve over the next season and a half.

Karleigh Rothe (5'9 F / Dublin Scioto / 2021): Rothe, the Grand Valley State lacrosse commit, has a high motor and is extremely competitive. She is one of the main rebounders for the Irish and makes her presence known on both ends of the floor. She is a talented defender and, along with her sisters, will be the motor that makes the Irish go this season.

Ashleigh Rothe (5'9 G / Dublin Scioto / 2021): Like her sister, Ashleigh is a Grand Valley State lacrosse commit and just as competitive. She locked down on Alexis Amabile in the second half, holding her virtually scoreless until it was necessary to foul at the end of the game. Rothe rebounds incredibly well and finishes strong through contact. She plays best from midrange and in but her athleticism draws opponents to the three point line.

Chloe Jeffers (5'11 WF / Delaware Hayes / 2022): Jeffers is a do it all workhorse for the Pacers. She offers great range when given a little space, handles the ball with confidence and poise, and attacks the basket well. Jeffers can defend both guards and post players and is a consistent rebounder on the defensive end of the floor. She injured her ankle in the second half of tonight’s contest, we hope that she is back to full strength soon and doesn't miss much time.

Alexis Amabile (5'10 G / Delaware Hayes / 2021): Amabile led Hayes in scoring with 21 points. She’s a volume shooter that has shown the ability to put up points in a hurry this season. She got to the free throw line 13 times on Tuesday, converting on 10, most of them late in the game in crunch time situations. We would like to see Amabile improve her shot selection, as she settled for some really tough looks. When she is hitting from three, she’s dangerous, however, she could be even better if she lets the game come to her more than what we saw on Tuesday.
