12-2 first half run helps Hartley stay perfect in big win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A rocky opening eight minutes didn’t deter Bishop Hartley in their non-conference matchup with Gahanna. Despite trailing early on in Tuesday night’s game, the Hawks were not to be stopped, using a big second quarter run to help themselves stay perfect in a 56-37 win.

After a competitive first quarter with multiple lead changes, the Lions carried a 18-13 advantage headed into the second quarter. Hartley used a 12-2 run to regain the lead and blow the second quarter open. The Hawks continued their run and went into halftime with a 31-25 edge.

In the second half, Hartley kicked off a 4-0 run that gave them a ten point lead that they would never relinquish. Despite a large amount of pressure from the Lions, Hartley was able to continue to score and dominate the boards leading to the win.

Eloise Brandewie (6’3 F / Bishop Hartley / 2023) - Brandewie was one of the most dominant players in the gym tonight with her lengthy 6’3 frame. The Division I volleyball recruit makes a huge impact on both ends of the floor for the Hawks. Though she struggled to finish at the rim tonight, she was the main reason Hartley saw two to three shots per possession due to her presence on the offensive boards. She helped to hold Gahanna Lincoln standout Bella Ward to well under her average.

Kami Kortokrax (5’10 F / Bishop Hartley / 2021) - The Ohio State softball signee is a double double machine for the Hawks. She has a nose for the ball on the offensive and defensive glass and runs extremely well from rim to rim. She finishes strong through contact and passes the ball efficiently in the half court, especially to Brandewie. The entire Hawks offense runs through Kortokrax, Brandewie, and Williams and man are they fun to watch.

Milayna Williams (5’8 PG / Bishop Hartley / 2021) - Muskingum got the steal of the year in Williams. She is a talented, smart, seasoned point guard who handles the ball with ease using both hands almost equally. Milayna attacks the basket with purpose and makes great decisions when passing or finishing. She is consistently setting up her teammates for good looks. Williams is the motor that makes this Hartley team go.

Gahanna Youngsters - The quartet of Kyla Jordan (2023), Laila Marshall (2023), Clarke Jackson (2023) and Aaliyah Younger (2024) will be great for the next four years for the lions. They all have potential to impact this program positively and to possibly play at the next level.
