Drey Carter and Jaiden Guice combine for 39 in a big win

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Playing the first boys game on the brand new Ed Calo court, Westerville South shot the lights out in the Phil Brown Classic on Monday afternoon, using a combined 39 points from Drey Carter and Jaiden Guice to secure a 52-40 win over Marysville.

Coming out aggressive from the opening tip, Westerville South established a 3-0 lead on their first offensive possession after Guice nailed a triple, a lead that they never gave up for the rest of the game.

After taking a 10 point lead into the second quarter, the Wildcats continued to push the tempo and play stellar defense, locking Marysville down in the frame to the tune of just a three point quarter.

Following another triple from Guice at the buzzer, Westerville South’s eighth three-pointer of the first half, they took a 29-12 lead into the locker room at the break.

After a rough first half, Marysville senior Jack Christian came out gunning to begin the second half, nailing three triples, assisting on a bucket and helping Marysville put together an 11-3 run to begin the half, all while also reaching 1000 career points.

Christian and the Monarchs showed some life offensively in the second half by trimming the deficit to single digits at times, however they never got it any closer than eight points as Westerville South had an answer to seemingly every punch they threw.

After a big slam from Guice near the end of the third quarter and a quick run to begin the final frame, the Wildcats put this one in the bag.

They were led by 21 points from Carter and 18 from Guice, while five other players scored, however all scored three points or less.

They move to 2-0 following the win and move their focus to a home contest against crosstown rival Westerville North on Saturday.

For Marysville, Christian led the way with 18 points as they fall to 1-3 on the young season.

Jaiden Guice (6’0 WG / Westerville South / 2021): After really catching our eye this fall when he put on a shooting clinic at our Proving Grounds events, Guice impressed us with much of the same skill set tonight. Catching fire from deep early, the lefty nailed four triples throughout the contest and showed off the ability to move without the ball and shoot it off the catch and the dribble. Guice also hit a mid range shot off the bounce and showed off his athletic ability with a two-handed slam in transition late in the third quarter. We were impressed with the way he passed the ball as well, getting by defenders and into the lane on multiple occasions where he made good choices and got his teammates involved. We like the way Guice competes defensively as well, doing a good job with Marysville star Jack Christian on the perimeter when tasked with defending him on Saturday. Guice would be a great pickup for small colleges in the area, as he is very skilled offensively and will only continue to get better.

Drey Carter (6’6 WF / Westerville South / 2022): Also putting on a shooting clinic on Monday, Carter buried five triples and led all scorers with 21 points. The junior showed off his smooth stroke on multiple catch and shoot opportunities, staying ready to shoot and converting efficiently from beyond the arc. At 6-foot-6, Carter has great length and can handle the ball on the perimeter, as he broke down defenders on multiple occasions and attacked the rim today. He converted on a tough floater over his defender and also a smooth pull up off the dribble from the free throw line extended area. Defensively, Carter is a reliable team defender and can disrupt things in one on one situations as well as in the passing lanes. A player who has just recently started to really blossom, Carter is a potential scholarship prospect in the 2022 class to keep an eye on.

Jack Christian (5’10 G / Marysville / 2021): After a tough first half where they couldn’t get anything going offensively, Christian was the spark plug Marysville needed in the second half. Nailing four triples today both off the catch and off the dribble, Christian’s stroke looked really good in the second half after a tough first 16 minutes. The senior guard also got to the rim for a tough score with his off hand and created a lot of good looks for his teammates that they failed to convert on on most occasions. On a team where he and Garrett Taylor have to create almost all of the offense, Christian does a good job of leading the Monarchs and giving them consistent production every night out and Monday was no different.
