Lancaster continues its hot streak to start the season improving to 5-0

LANCASTER, Ohio -- Lancaster won their fifth straight gameto start 2020, taking down New Albany 67-42 on Tuesday night  behind a great performance from juniors Dylan West, Sam Finck, and company.

The Gales were down 8-6 early on in the first quarter, before breaking through and going on an 18-2 run to take control of the game. A balanced offensive attack and strong defensive effort made the undefeated Lancaster squad too much for New Albany to handle.

After leading 29-15 at halftime, the Gales fought off just one New Albany run before ultimately putting the game away. The Eagles came out in the third quarter and showed a bit of life through the play of sophomore guard Sam Dunn. But before any real threat was made to Lancaster’s lead, West and Finck decided to take control, combining for 17 in the third quarter alone.

New Albany was without Justin Perry, their star six-foot-seven junior, and it was evident on both sides of the ball. The Eagles struggled to stop Lancaster from inside of 15 feet and were one-dimensional on the offensive end.

For the Gales, West finished as the game’s leading scorer with 17 points including four impressive threes. Finck contributed 12 points and Blake Snezik also finished in double figures with 11 points.

New Albany’s bright spot was from Dunn’s 12 point effort which included many great plays on both ends of the floor all night.

Lancaster is playing very unselfish team basketball right now and will attempt to go 6-0 when they host Reynoldsburg on January 2. New Albany is back in action on January 5 when they travel to Olentangy Berlin.

Dylan West (5’8 G / Lancaster / 2022) - West was without a doubt the player of the game Tuesday night as he went for a game-high 17 points and led his team to their third consecutive blowout victory. There wasn’t a shot too deep for the junior tonight as he hit two triples from two or three steps behind the line. Nor was there a shot too contested. When West got going in the third quarter he made a beautiful stepback three and another off the dribble, both guarded very well and very much next level shots, but the junior hit both with confidence. He showed off his good handle on the ball, creating space to shoot and get by defenders. West also played unselfishly, finding teammates when defenders stepped over into help. All around great game from the junior who doesn’t have great size, but still will put the ball in the basket and make the right play.

Sam Dunn (5’8 G / New Albany / 2023) - Despite the outcome of the game being very lopsided, Dunn played an excellent game and did what he could to keep his team in the game. He had many good looks tonight that just didn’t fall, looks that on any other night he is capable of making. The sophomore played arguably the most complete game out of anyone on the floor. Offensively, Dunn has a great feel for the game. He has the ball on a string, can hit the pull up, and can drive by you and finish through contact despite not having the size advantage. Defensively he was just as impressive, moving his feet and walling up when his man was driving to the basket. His help and rotations were good and he has very active hands. Arguably what was most impressive was his maturity in transition and driving to the bucket. A couple of times tonight he displayed great pace going to the rim, as well as taking multiple pull ups when defenders were set to take a charge. The game comes easy to the very mature five-foot-eight guard.
