Keaton Norris and AJ Mirgon combine for 49 in a big win

POWELL, Ohio -- In a normal high school program, losing a star like Matt Allocco is a major hit on the next season. However, Hilliard Bradley is not a normal program.

Making a statement by putting together a complete team effort, the Jaguars rolled to a big OCC-Central win over Olentangy Liberty to open the season on Friday, defeating the Patriots 70-53.

AJ Mirgon got the night started taking the ball to the rack with ease. The first quarter was back and forth for most of the frame, but it was the Keaton Norris and Mirgon show all night as they combined for 18 in the first quarter alone. Mirgon started the quarter and ended the quarter  with a triple, nailing a big shot at the buzzer.

Coach Brett Norris and his Jaguars did their homework before tonight and it showed on the floor. Their defense suffocated the Patriots offense, as they sometimes were even calling the plays for the Patriots.

The Jaguars kept rolling in the second, holding a steady lead at 10. After a Keaton Norris triple and a Patriot timeout the Patriots went on a quick 6-0 run sparked by a Ty Foster three. The run cut the Hilliard Bradley lead to six. It remained at six for the rest of the quarter with Henry Hinkle scoring at the halftime buzzer to make it 36-30 at the break.

The Jaguars went on to dominate in the third quarter, starting the frame on an 11-3 run. Olentangy Liberty called a timeout to try and calm things down but it simply did not work.

The Patriots still had some hope in the fourth, going on a quick 5-0 run with some help from Cooper Davis and his pure shot making ability, but the Patriots never got over the hump.

Keaton Norris and Mirgon were of course the front cover story from tonight, combining for 49, but certainly got some help from Keaton's younger brother Cade Norris, who had 11 and was a consistent presence on the boards.

Coach Norris’ team does it all and they put on a clinic tonight. Even though this was the Jaguars season debut, they already seem to be in mid season form. This team has great chemistry and it certainly shows with great communication on the defensive end of the floor.

Andrew Wade is an animal on both sides of the ball for the Patriots and was the leading scorer for his squad tonight with 16 points.

The Patriots fall to 3-1 and their schedule does not get easier as they look to respond Tuesday against another defending district champion Thomas Worthington.

Hilliard Bradley gets their first win of the season and looks to keep it going tomorrow at home against Upper Arlington. The Jaguars have now won 58-straight OCC games dating back to 2016 when they lost to Andre and Kaleb Wesson.
