Liberty Union's balanced attack leads the Lions over Fisher Catholic

LANCASTER, Ohio -- In an early season MSL crossover matchup between the Liberty Union Lions and the Fisher Catholic Irish, the Lions came out on top by a score of 63-48.

In the first frame, the Lions showed off their balanced attack, having four different players in the scoring column. Senior Carson Warner led the way, scoring seven of his 10 points in the first. Despite a strong quarter for the Lions, the Irish were keeping the score close with a three point lead after the first..

Liberty Union's 21-2 second quarter was the deciding factor of Thursday's game. The Irish were held scoreless through the first five minutes of the quarter, sparking a 15-0 run for the Lions. Fisher Catholics senior Alex Smith ended their run with a midrange pull up jumper.

Liberty Union 6-foot-6 junior Jacob Denney was a huge contributor during this run by hauling in a handful of offensive rebounds, which extended possessions and created open looks for his teammates. The Lions headed into halftime leading 36-14.

Fisher Catholic started the second half out strong on the defensive end, holding the Lions scoreless through the first three minutes of the third quarter. The Irish went on a 6-0 run during this time, which was sparked by seniors Alex Bronder and Josh Burke who had a really solid second half.

Senior Ty Boggs came into the game off the bench, scoring six of 10 points in the second half to give the Lions a spark. He was able to put pressure on the Irish guards, which forced turnovers and led to easy fast break opportunities. The Lions held a 46-28 lead after three quarters.

Bronder started the final period strong, by scoring six quick points. Fisher Catholic battled all night but Liberty Union seemed to answer every run. Despite outscoring the Lions in the second half, Liberty Unions stellar second quarter was too much to overcome. The Lions finished off the solid overall effort with a 63-48 victory.

The Lions had five different players in double figures. Junior Kalib Riddle had a team high 12 points, junior Jack Brown pitched in 11 points, and Denney added a double double with a game high 12 rebounds. Seniors Boggs and Warner each added 10 points as well.

The Irish were led by Bronder with a game high 13 points and Burke with 10.

Liberty Unions depth and balance was on full display, showing the ability to rotate several different players, with little drop off. This strength will be a key factor to the Lions' success as they go forward this season.

The Liberty Union Lions (3-2) will look to pick up where they left off next Monday against Fairfield Union at home.

The Fisher Catholic Irish (0-3) will look to get their first win of the season this Friday, December 18th when they host the Northside Christian Lions (0-1).

Jacob Denney (6'6 F/ Liberty Union / 2022): The 6-foot-6 big was my MVP of Thursday’s game. He was a force in the paint, hauling in a game high 12 rebounds. A handful of his boards came on the offensive end, which extended possessions and created a lot of open looks for his teammates. He has a nice touch around the basket and showed the ability to shoot from mid range. I think his strength is his rebounding on both ends. Denney has good instincts and seems to always be around the ball. He runs the floor well in the Lions high speed attack, which makes him a difficult match up in the MSL-Buckeye.

Kalib Riddle (6'4 F / Liberty Union / 2022): Riddle is a solid all around player for the Lions. He was steady throughout, scoring in each quarter leading to a team high 12 points. He has good size and runs the floor well. Liberty Union looks to push the tempo and Riddle excels in this style. Defensively, he combines with frontcourt teammate Denney to lockdown the paint. Riddle is a quick and athletic 6-foot-4 wing that can score and defend on the perimeter as well as around the basket.

Alex Bronder (6’3 WG / Fisher Catholic / 2021): A contributor on last season's district finals team, Bronder had a difficult time finding good looks in the first half against a stingy Lions defense. In the second half, he showed flashes of the player he can be, by scoring a team high 13 points. Bronder has good length and can run the point for the Irish. He was really good in the open floor, attacking and finishing a variety of shots around the basket. He showed off his range hitting one three pointer. He will need to be more consistent throughout the game for the Irish to be successful going forward.
