Seniors take the stage as Falcons cruise in MSL win

LANCASTER, Ohio -- Fairfield Union (1-0) jumped out to an early lead in Tuesday night’s contest behind the play of star seniors Ryan Magill and Charlie Bean. The Falcons never looked back as they cruised to a 54-39 win over Mid-State League opponent Circleville (1-3).

Magill, a 6-foot-4 senior guard committed to Marietta, led the way with 18 points and four rebounds. Right behind him was his senior counterpart, 6-foot-4 wing Charlie Bean who finished with a double-double including 17 points and 12 rebounds. The duo dominated both ends of the floor from start to finish tonight.

Circleville didn’t have any scorers in double figures tonight, but saw eight players contribute to the scoring column. The Tigers were led by 6-foot-1 junior forward Craig Fleck who put up a modest statline of five points, three rebounds, and three assists.

Circleville is without their standout senior guard Riley Gibson after he suffered a knee injury before the season began. Unfortunately for the Tigers they also lost Evan Justice, another very talented senior guard, to a head injury late in the first quarter. Without their two stars, Circleville struggled to put the ball in the basket and stop the balanced Fairfield Union offense.

As the schedule stands, Fairfield Union will travel to London on Saturday to play their second game. Circleville will also hit the road on the 19th to take on Amanda-Clearcreek in another league contest.

Ryan Magill (6’4 G / Fairfield Union / 2021): Magill had an incredible showing in the first game of his senior season Tuesday night. The Marietta-commit scored efficiently from all areas of the floor. Standing at 6-foot-4, Magill has one of the smoothest jumpers in the area. When you match that with his ability to handle the ball and be a playmaker, he becomes an all around great talent. Magill also did not force a bad shot or make a bad pass all game. He showed he is very mature and hungry to lead the Falcons this year.

Charlie Bean (6’4 W / Fairfield Union / 2021): Bean did everything for the Falcons tonight pouring in an impressive double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Even with a clear size advantage over his opponents, he was boxing out, securing tough rebounds, and fighting for each loose ball. Bean also had his way on the offensive end tonight, getting to the rim at will and finishing up over defenders. Despite only connecting on one three, Bean is a capable shooter from deep who must be run off the three point line. Look for him to continue to excel this season using his size and strength.

Christian Carsey (5’11 W / Fairfield Union / 2021): When role players fulfill their role and even exceed it, it’s a thing of beauty. At just 5-foot-11, Carsey was seen tonight playing inside and outside, having success in both spots. He was patient on the offensive end and only took the shots that came to him within the offense. Carsey buried two triples in the process showing he cannot be left open for catch and shoot threes. The senior also stood tall on the defensive end tonight really helping the Falcons shut Circleville down. Late in the fourth quarter when the game was seemingly over, Carsey stepped over and took a charge. It’s that kind of effort that makes a team successful and a program elite.

Craig Fleck (6’1 F / Circleville / 2022): Despite a tough showing from Circleville as a whole, a few bright spots appeared. Junior forward Craig Fleck had a good showing for the Tigers, putting up a modest five points, three rebounds, and three assists. Fleck had a few strong and under-control takes to the rim, as well as some mature moves in the post. He also did well finding open teammates in the offense. For Circleville to have success moving forward, especially without Gibson and potentially without Justice, Fleck will need to step up as an upperclassmen in the Tigers program.

Briley Cramer (5’11 G / Circleville / 2024): Another bright spot for the Tigers was from freshman Briley Cramer. When Justice went out late in the first quarter, Cramer was brought in and forced to shoot two free throws in the midst of a Fairfield Union run. The freshman buried them both and went on to make a mid-range jumper and a deep three pointer in the next few minutes. Cramer had a noticeable performance at The Intro this past fall and we’re excited to see how he progresses with the Tigers.
