Worthington Christian nails 14 triples in a rout of Liberty Union

WORTHINGTON, Ohio -- Coming into tonight's matchup with Liberty Union fresh off of a big win at Adena over the weekend and cruising at 4-0, Worthington Christian showed no signs of slowing down as they dominated the Lions 84-52 in a contest where they buried 14 three-pointers.

While the score may not seem to indicate so, this was a competitive game throughout the first two quarters.

Liberty Union jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the first several minutes, however, four triples from Worthington Christian senior guard Drew Faieta turned the tide in favor of the Warriors towards the end of the frame, allowing them to capture a 23-17 lead after one.

Despite Liberty Union trimming the deficit back down to four midway through the second following a three from senior wing Jacob Berlekamp, Faieta nailed another three of his own just before the buzzer and Worthington Christian took a 40-30 lead into the locker room, a lead they only built on for the rest of the night.

Blowing it open in the second half, the offensive firepower of Worthington Christian was simply too much for Liberty Union as they increased their lead to 20 heading into the fourth quarter and continued to roll for the final eight minutes.

The Warriors were led by 21 points from DJ Moore, while Tyler Kindberg added 20 and Faieta tallied 18 on six three's.

They move to 5-0 on the early season and await their toughest test yet as they will take on Newark at home on Thursday.

For Liberty Union, Berlekamp led the way with 19 in an impressive showing while junior Kalib Riddle added 17 of his own. The Lions move to 1-2 after tonight's contest and will be back in action on Friday when they host Bloom-Carroll.

Let's take a look at some of tonight's top performers.

Tyler Kindberg (6'3 WF / Worthington Christian / 2021): Kindberg continued to show off the work he has put in to continue rounding out his game tonight, finishing with 20 points and affecting the game in a handful of ways defensively. While the senior excelled scoring in transition as he normally does with his combination of length, speed and athleticism, he also showed off his shooting ability by converting on three triples and knocking down a shot in the mid-range. Defensively, Kindberg is one of the area's best perimeter defenders, is consistently active in the passing lanes and plays with a great IQ on that end of the floor. For any programs looking for an absolute winner who offers intriguing value on both ends of the floor, Kindberg is your guy, as he has the potential to be a scholarship kid with the strides he has continued to make over the last three seasons.

Drew Faieta (6'1 WG / Worthington Christian / 2021): Doing what he does best on Tuesday night, Faieta got hot from deep and knocked down six triples on his way to an 18 point outing. Faieta is one the area's better shooters, as he has a quick trigger, gets open off the ball and is capable of hitting shots off the dribble. With Liberty Union flashing several different zone looks at Worthington Christian tonight, Faieta's value was unmatchable as he caught fire early and shifted the momentum of the game. The senior plays with a high IQ offensively, rarely makes bad choices and is a solid team defender with a bit of length. For any small college programs in need of a shooter, check out Faieta, as he has an absolute flamethrower and consistently does his part to impact winning.

Jacob Berlekamp (6'4 WG / Liberty Union / 2021): A player who we have not seen since he participated in the open division of our fall league two years ago, it was refreshing to get another look at Berlekamp tonight as the senior really impressed us. At 6-foot-4 with some length to his frame, Berlekamp makes his mark felt on both ends of the floor. He knocked down three triples on Tuesday, had a few finishes in which he showed off a soft touch and got to the line five times, using a quick first step and a formidable handle to get past several different matchups that Worthington Christian threw his way. Defensively, Berlekamp can defend on the wing reliably despite not being a lockdown defender, however, he uses his length to his advantage greatly, as he deflected a few passes playing in the top of the Liberty Union zone and even blocked a shot tonight. On a team that saw their highs and lows last season, Berlekamp is clearly Liberty Union's best player and is worth the time of small college programs looking for a skilled guard with a good frame.

DJ Moore (6'3 PG / Worthington Christian / 2022): We are going to keep it short here due to how many times we have written about Moore over the last few weeks, however he still deserves a mention as he was excellent again tonight and led all scorers with 21 points. Continuing to look the part of the future Division III Central District Player of the Year, Moore commanded the Worthington Christian offense with authority once again on Tuesday, scoring in a handful of ways and setting up teammates for scores. He also came up with several big steals on the defensive end and played virtually the entire game despite some garbage time. As long as Moore is rolling, Worthington Christian will continue to roll as they are the hottest team in the depleted area awaiting a big test with Newark on Thursday.

Kalib Riddle (6'4 F / Liberty Union / 2022): Riddle showed flashes of potential on Tuesday night in a 17 point showing against Worthington Christian. Scoring it from all three levels, Riddle nailed a three, connected on a mid-range and got most of his buckets inside. He did a solid job of cleaning up the glass on both ends of the floor and playing disciplined team defense. On a team like Liberty Union where depth is not their strong suit, players like Riddle are key, as he played for the majority of the game on Tuesday and in most cases made his impact felt positively.
