Ty Hatfield went for 23 points to power Fredericktown to a big road win

HEBRON, Ohio -- Making our first trip out to Lakewood in a few years, it was nice to catch another match up between two rural schools that we don't get to see very often. The host Lancers were no match for Fredericktown, who relied on 38 combined points from seniors Ty Hatfield and Lincoln Cunningham to roll to a 79-44 win.

The Freddies played at a high tempo and put the ball in the hands of Hatfield, who went for 16 first half points and handful of assists in the first half to jump out to a 37-23 lead at the break. Lakewood was led by 16 points in the half from sophomore Trenton Collins, who connected on three triples and a couple impressive finishes at the rim.

In the second half, Fredericktown forced the ball out of Collins' hands and began to cause havoc. Outscoring Lakewood 21-10 in the third quarter, Fredericktown got a big frame from Cunningham who came back from foul trouble in the first half.

Leading by as many as 35 points in the final frame, Fredericktown rolled to a big opening win to a season that could be a very good one for the Freddies.

Hatfield led the way with 23 points for Fredericktown, while Cunningham pitched in 15. Sophomore forward Kaid Carpenter showed flashes of big potential with nine points, while senior guard Caleb Sheriff added nine as well.

For Lakewood, Collins was the bulk of the offense, scoring 23 points. No other Lakewood player added more than seven on Tuesday.

Let's take a look at the top prospects from the game.

Ty Hatfield (6'0 PG / Fredericktown / 2021):  If he weren't already committed to Tiffin for baseball, we'd suggest that college basketball coaches take a long, hard look at Hatfield as a point guard. The best player in the gym on Tuesday, Hatfield thoroughly dominated the game with an impressive showing as a scorer and distributor. Knocking down four threes, finishing through contact at will and dumping off a handful of dime assists, Hatfield was in control of Tuesday's game from start to finish. The 6-foot senior has an elite IQ, is an elite passer and can play at multiple speeds, as he has the special ability to anticipate what the defense is going to do before they do it. With him at the helm of a high powered up tempo offense, Fredericktown is going to put up major points all season long as Hatfield absolutely makes everyone better around him, and can get a bucket, or two, or three, when needed.

Trenton Collins (6'3 WG / Lakewood / 2023): Scoring more than half of Lakewood's points on Tuesday, Collins did all he could against a very good Fredericktown team. In a 2023 class where a handful of players have made their presence known already, Collins is a sleeper prospect who looks to have scholarship potential. A very good athlete at 6-foot-3, Collins is an explosive wing that attacked the basket and was able to finish athletically at the rim. Knocking down four threes on Tuesday, Collins showed the ability to create and make his own shot off the bounce and had the vision and IQ to dump off to open teammates when the defense collapsed on him. On a Lakewood team that will need every single ounce of production that he can provide, look for Collins to potentially have a breakout season and put up numbers like tonight on a consistent basis.

Lincoln Cunningham (6'2 WG / Fredericktown / 2021): One of the top returning scorers anywhere in the area, Cunningham has been an absolute bucket among rural school players over the last few years. We saw exactly why in our first viewing of him on Tuesday. An athletic guard who plays at a crazy tempo, Cunningham was in attack mode from the opening tip and was able to get to the rim at will. A reckless finisher who was not afraid to put his body on the line, Cunningham clearly sets the tone for the Freddies with his motor and toughness, as they played with another gear with him on the floor. Cunningham knocked down a three, played the passing lanes for a few steals and showed to have good vision and passing ability on the move. Division III programs should really give him a look, as he is one of the better senior wing guard prospects in the area.

Kaid Carpenter (6'4 WF / Fredericktown / 2023): Broad-shouldered long 6-foot-4 forward who had a strong performance with nine points and a few impressive assists. Carpenter has an athletic build and showed the ability to finish through contact at the basket. He stretched the floor to the three-point line on one make and showed to be an advanced passer for his size and position. With Fredericktown being very senior laden, look for Carpenter to evolve into a go-to player for the Freddies over the next few years.
