Caroline Berlekamp goes for 14 points in a big league win

BALTIMORE, Ohio -- The MSL-Buckeye kicked off league play on Saturday as Teays Valley hit the road to take on Liberty Union. The two teams, complete with mostly underclassmen talent, went at it in a low-scoring slugfest of a basketball game.

Liberty Union hit the shots needed and connected on key free throws down the stretch to hold off Teays Valley in a 40-33 victory.

Liberty Union jumped out to a 17-9 lead early in the game, however, Teays Valley creeped back as a hot-shooting second quarter helped the Vikings trim the lead to 23-22 at the break.

In the third, Liberty Union sophomore forward Caroline Berlekamp put her stamp on the game with back-to-back impressive buckets to extend the Lions lead to 32-25 with 3:11 to go in the period.

Teays Valley attempted to claw back in the fourth quarter, however, the Vikings missed a potential game-tying and go-ahead free throw, which seemed to be their last chance as they'd never score again the rest of the way.

Berlekamp led all scorers with 14 points in an impressive showing in the post and mid-range area. Berlekamp's classmate and 6-foot guard Abbie Riddle added seven while senior guard Maggie Cundiff knocked down three triples to finish with nine points.

For Teays Valley, freshman guard Alyssa Horsley led her team in scoring with 10 points. Senior Megan Bush added seven points on two three-point makes, while no other player added more than six.

Liberty Union will look to keep winning when the Lions head to Bloom-Carroll next Friday in league play. For Teays Valley, the Vikings will have a tough home challenge against defending league champion and state semifinalist Circleville next Friday.

Caroline Berlekamp (6'2 PF / Liberty Union / 2023): The top stock riser in Saturday's game, Berlekamp was very impressive on the interior and in the mid-range as she led all scorers with 14 points. Finishing through contact around the basket and stretching her catch and shoot game to just inside the three-point line, Berlekamp was a reliable offensive threat that Liberty Union relied on heavily on Saturday. The biggest momentum shift in Saturday's game came in the third quarter when Berlekamp knocked down a long two-point shot then came back on the next possession, forced a steal off the ball and raced coast to coast for a huge finish to extend the Lions' lead. With great size and capable skill to go with it, Berlekamp is a young post prospect to remember in the area.

Abbie Riddle (6'0 PG / Liberty Union / 2023): There's not a single sophomore in the area with more Division I offers than Riddle, as the 6-foot guard holds 11 scholarships already. With that in mind, we were very excited to get another look at the big lead guard. We were impressed instantly with her impressive handle, as she has the innate ability at 6-foot to change speeds, direction and pace. While Saturday wasn't her finest shooting performance, Riddle still found a way to create off the bounce and get her own shot. However, the most impressive part of Riddle's game to us is her ability to communicate, as she is a true floor general that puts her teammates in position to win. We liked the way Riddle competed on the defensive end, as she was a threat on and off the ball to create turnovers and get the transition game going. We look forward to catching Riddle more this season as the young Liberty Union Lions will be a team to keep an eye on in the MSL-Buckeye.

Alyssa Horsley (5'8 G / Teays Valley / 2024): We really enjoyed watching Horsley compete on Saturday, as she was one of the best sharp-shooting guards that we've seen so far this year. A confident guard with a deadly perimeter shot, Horsley also showed off a reliable handle and the ability to finish at the rim. Teays Valley was at their best when Horsley was on the floor, as she provides a high-level catch and shoot presence on the wing and can also get it going off the dribble as well. We look forward to watching Horsley develop, as she has a reliable game that is more than ready for the varsity level.

Kennedy Younkin (6'1 PF / Teays Valley / 2024): Developing post player with broad shoulders and great size. Younkin battled hard underneath against Liberty Union's big front line, competing on the boards and blocking a few shots. While she is still a bit raw in terms of her skill set, Younkin showed to be a capable finisher through contact around the basket and provides valuable impact with her size and physicality alone. Younkin is a young big to keep an eye on, as she showed flashes of high potential on Saturday.
