Reynoldsburg went the college route to find its next head coach

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio -- Reynoldsburg went an interesting route to hire its next boys basketball coach.

Going to the college ranks, the Raiders nabbed six-year Air Force assistant coach Andrew Moore, a native of Mount Vernon, to lead its boys basketball program.

"I am excited to bring my family back to where I grew up, my father coached and I played at Mount Vernon High School," Moore said in a statement posted by Reynoldsburg City Schools.

Moore has spent the last 26 years at the college level, serving in various roles as an assistant coach for the majority of those years. For the last six years Moore has been on the bench at Air Force, spending the last two seasons as the associate head coach.

Prior to Air Force, Moore spent time at Virginia Tech, Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green and Kenyon. Moore's Air Force teams ran a Princeton style offense that will translate well to the high school level.

With nearly three decades of experience at the college level, Moore will bring an interesting perspective to the Raiders program. The Central Ohio native was last on a high school bench from 1992-94 when he served as an assistant coach under his father Dave Moore at Mount Vernon.

Abundance of talent will not be an issue as Reynoldsburg is the area's largest high school with an enrollment of 952 boys. As of the 2019-20 season, Reynoldsburg was the 11th largest high school in the state.

Moore will have a bit of an inexperienced roster to work with however, as Reynoldsburg loses its top three scorers from the 2019-20 season to either graduation or transfer.

Returning for the Raiders is a core of intriguing young talent including top returning scorer and junior-to-be point guard Julian Heckman. Outside of Heckman, who averaged 8.6 points per game last season, Reynoldsburg retains rising senior forward Zaveon Croff, rising junior guard Javon Waters and rising sophomore wing Jabari Mitchell, among others.

Moore's first season at the helm will be a unique one with COVID-19 restrictions limiting what teams and players can do this offseason, along with Reynoldsburg moving to a new division of the OCC that includes traditional powerhouses Pickerington Central and Newark, along with Groveport, Lancaster and Central Crossing.

"The OCC is the premiere conference in the state of Ohio and it is a privilege to be a part of it," Moore said.

Reynoldsburg is coming off a strong stretch of basketball over the last four years where the Raiders won 71 games, appeared in two district finals and won one in 2018.

Moore replaces Scott Davis, who resigned after nine strong seasons at the helm where he led Reynoldsburg to district titles in 2012 and 2018.
