A look at the latest recruiting news around Central Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With the outbreak of COVID-19 seemingly halting all sports across most of the world, that has not stopped local seniors from making decisions regarding their basketball futures.

Let's take a look at the latest recruiting news from around the area.

  • Elgin senior wing Ryan Sheridan committed to Ohio Wesleyan. In the second of two commitments on Wednesday, Sheridan pledged to Ohio Wesleyan where the 6-foot-5 scoring guard should have a chance to contribute greatly. Sheridan was a breakout player this season, averaging 20 points per game and earning first team all-district honors in Division III, all of which impressive for a player that had yet to ever talk to a college coach before our first viewing of him in January.
  • Independence senior guard Andre Trent committed to Lakeland Community College. No player, ever, in the history of Ohio high school basketball has made more threes in a game than Trent. The 5-foot-10 senior guard made history in Independence's final game of the regular season when he hit a state-record 17 threes and scored 54 points in three quarters in a win over Cristo Rey. Trent's marksmanship behind the three-point line in that game, and our ensuing coverage of it all, helped him earn two junior college offers which led to Wednesday's commitment. Trent is another example of a hard-working player that found opportunity at the right time, as Lakeland CC is one of the strongest juco programs in Ohio and will greatly welcome the sniper from Independence. With the commitments from Sheridan and Trent on Wednesday, there are now 29 seniors in Central Ohio committed to play basketball at the next level.
  • Licking Valley senior guard Carson Conley committed to Ohio Northern. The first 1,000 point scorer at Licking Valley in 16 years, Conley ended his recruiting process on Tuesday night when he announced his commitment to Division III Ohio Northern.
  • New Albany senior guard Keegan Schaub committed to Findlay. Schaub became the second member of his family to commit to a Division II program in the GMAC over the last five years, as the New Albany guard announced his commitment to Ohio-power Findlay on Monday. Schaub's older brother Austin Schaub has spent the last five years at Tiffin and unfortunately won't get to match up against his younger brother, however, still an impressive accomplishment for the two brothers who stand at No. 1 and No. 2 all-time in assists at New Albany.
  • Franklin Heights senior guard Mo Fofana committed to Capital. Becoming the first Franklin Heights grad to commit to college for basketball since Akiean Frederick in 2014, Fofana announced his commitment to Capital on Tuesday morning. The 6-foot guard is a high-motor, tough guard with an elite academic profile. Fofana is a perfect example of patience and commitment in the classroom paying off in the form of no tuition at one of the best colleges in the state.
  • Grandview Heights senior guard Brian Collier committed to Concord. Announcing his commitment last week, Collier ended his recruiting process by committing to the only program to offer him a Division II scholarship. Concord smartly got involved with Collier, who is one of the very best guards in the area, earning first team all-state honors in Division IV. Collier has enjoyed a major senior season that unfortunately was halted a day before he was set to play in the D4 regional finals.

Other News and Notes

  • Former Gahanna wing Matt Moyer announced he is transferring to George Washington for his final season. The former Syracuse and Vanderbilt forward will play in the most powerful city in the world for his senior year, which will more than likely boost Moyer's promising career off the floor more than anything.
  • Northland legend Seth Towns announced he is transferring to Ohio State as a grad transfer. Read our full report on the Harvard grad's decision here.
  • Newark alum JT Shumate has transferred to Toledo after two great years at Walsh. The 6-foot-7 forward will fit in greatly as a stretch four in the Rockets program and will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2021-22 season.
  • Wellington senior Elijah Meredith recently announced his commitment to Wooster. Meredith joins a Wooster program with some big-time talent already, as the 6-foot-5 forward should greatly help.
  • Canal Winchester senior Cole Metzler recently announced his commitment to Ohio Wesleyan. Metzler fits the build of recent bigs that OWU has recruited out of Central Ohio, as his physical style of play should fit in well.
  • Briggs senior guard Domenic Farley recently announced his commitment to Wilmington. The senior will fit in greatly with Wilmington's uptempo style of play, as Farley is one of the more underrated shooters and distributors in the senior class.
  • Heath sophomore big man Brandon McLaughlin received his first offer from Division II Valdosta State. The 6-foot-8 McLaughlin had a breakout year in leading Heath to an undefeated regular season and district semifinal finish.
