Harvard transfer Seth Towns chose Ohio State over Duke live on SportsCenter

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- He's coming home. The city's prodigal son has returned. Announcing his decision live on SportsCenter on Saturday, Harvard graduate transfer Seth Towns did what he has always done by once again going against the grain and carving out his own path.

While in high school, that path was choosing Harvard over big-time basketball programs like Ohio State and Michigan.

This time around, Towns took it a step further by choosing his hometown school Ohio State over national powerhouse Duke, who entered the fray just this week.

Towns is immediately eligible and is looking to play one year before transitioning to the NBA. The Harvard senior will graduate in May, achieving an accomplishment that no basketball player in City League history has ever done.

The Columbus native flirted with the idea of transferring to Ohio State earlier in his career but never pulled the trigger. After missing the last two years with a knee injury, Towns began seriously pondering about the grad transfer route last summer with Ohio State at the top of his list.

When Towns officially put his name in the NCAA transfer portal in January, more than 70 programs contacted him before he cut his initial list to Ohio State, Michigan, Kansas, Syracuse, Maryland and Virginia.

Duke entered the picture this week and threw things for a loop, as Towns seriously considered the Blue Devils (I mean, who wouldn't?).

Towns fills an immediate need for Ohio State and will have a strong chance to become the Buckeyes' go-to scorer on the perimeter. The Buckeyes staff is extremely excited about Towns' arrival, as head coach Chris Holtmann has been recruiting the graduate transfer for the greater part of the last decade after offering him while leading the Butler program.

When Towns committed to Harvard, Butler was thought to have finished No. 2 in that race, as Holtmann finally won the battle for one of Columbus' proudest sons.

The 6-foot-7 Columbus native is Northland's all-time leading scorer after pouring in 2,018 points in his career that spanned from 2012-16. Towns surpassed former Michigan great Trey Burke and former Buckeye great Jared Sullinger on the way to that milestone.
