A look at the Division III sectional semifinal action in the area

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Division III sectional tournament tipped off on Wednesday night. Let's take a look at the games in the area.

#3 North Union (22-0) 71, #9 Amanda-Clearcreek (12-10) 55

Jumping out to an early lead and never looking back, North Union remained unbeaten in a 71-55 win over Amanda-Clearcreek, who was the last team to beat the Wildcats heading into Tuesday's sectional semifinal.

Four players scored in double figures for North Union, led by 20 points from junior wing guard Preston Crabtree. Senior guard Connor Terrill led the way early with his three-point shooting while the Wildcats got strong contributions from its front court of sophomore Zach Vernon and senior Harley Day.

For Amanda-Clearcreek, the Aces could never seem to get into a rhythm after taking an 8-6 lead in the first quarter. Allowing North Union to respond with a 27-16 run following its momentary lead, Amanda-Clearcreek dug itself a hole it could not climb out of.

Despite beating North Union in the sectional finals a year ago, the Aces did not have the same magic on Tuesday, as senior guard Jeff Bolin was the only consistent scoring threat for Amanda-Clearcreek in the loss.

North Union advances to the sectional finals to host No. 16 West Jefferson (12-9) on Friday at 7 p.m.

#1 Harvest Prep (19-3) 88, #22 International (1-21) 40

Harvest Prep used 31 points from senior CJ Anthony and a 38-2 first quarter to punish International in sectional semifinal action, 88-40.

The Warriors went on a 35-0 run in the first quarter and never looked back as Anthony powered Harvest Prep with what has become the norm lately for the area's all-time leading scorer.

Harvest Prep advances to the sectional finals to host No. 21 Utica (5-17) on Friday at 7 p.m.

#5 Africentric (12-10) 76, #20 Cristo Rey (7-12) 28

Star freshman Dailyn Swain scored 21 points and led all scorers as Africentric rolled to a sectional semifinal win over Cristo Rey, 76-28.

Three different players scored in double figures for the Nubians, as Africentric jumped out to a 53-15 halftime lead.

Africentric advances to the sectional finals to host No. 18 Mount Gilead (9-13) on Friday at 7 p.m.

#7 Johnstown (16-7) 66, #17 Liberty Union (8-15) 54

After closing the regular season strong, Johnstown carried that momentum into tonight’s matchup with a big win over Liberty Union by a score of 66-54.

Liberty Union had a superb gameplan coming into tonight and executed it flawlessly in the first half. The Lions changing of defenses made the Johnnies uncomfortable, which forced turnovers resulting in easy baskets. Liberty Union held the lead for the majority of the first half and went into halftime with a 25-21 lead.

The second half was a different story. Johnstown regained the lead at the beginning of the third quarter and never looked back. A 25-14 third quarter led by four Johnstown three pointers was the turning point in the game.

Johnstown's junior Jake Lusk had a game high in points and rebounds with 22 and 10. Lusk also added six assists, as the Johnnies ran their offense through him, opening things up for his teammates. Junior Gavin Foe contributed 21 points on a variety of different drives to the basket and Senior Matt Sayer added 12 points and a game high eight assists.

Tonight, Liberty Union showed off their depth and balanced approach by having seven players score. Junior Ty Boggs and sophomore Jacob Denney added 12 points each to lead the Lions in scoring. Junior Jacob Berlekamp added 11 points.

Johnstown advances to the sectional finals to play at No. 6 Centerburg (15-7) on Friday at 7 p.m.

#10 Fredericktown (14-9) 45, #15 Madison Plains (10-10) 43

Fredericktown advances to the sectional finals to play at No. 8 Northmor (15-7) on Friday at 7 p.m. This will be the third matchup between the KMAC rivals. Northmor won both regular season meetings.

#14 Fairbanks (12-11) 45, #11 Elgin (12-10) 22

Avenging a loss to Elgin earlier in the year, Fairbanks turned up the defensive pressure and ran the Comets out of their own gym in a 45-22 sectional victory.

Fairbanks junior forward Braylon Green continued a breakout season with 15 points to power the Panthers. Holding one of the area's top scorers in Elgin senior Ryan Sheridan to five points on a single field goal, Fairbanks redeemed themselves after a loss in the sectional semifinal round a year ago.

Fairbanks advances to the sectional finals to play at No. 2 Worthington Christian (18-4) on Friday at 7 p.m.
