A look at the Division IV sectional semifinal action in the area

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Tournament time has began! With Division IV sectional semifinal action tipping off on Thursday, here is a look at the top action in the area.

#1 Grandview Heights (18-5) 72, #19 Danville (2-21) 32

In a rather lopsided matchup in the first round, Grandview jumped out to a 17-0 lead on Danville in the first quarter on their way to a dominant 72-32 win.

The Bobcats got contributions from all over the roster, allowing their bench to play a hefty chunk of the contest and seeing 12 different players on the roster score at some point.

Brian Collier led Grandview with 16 points, while Luke Lachey and Charlie James each contributed 10 of their own.

For Danville, sophomore Wyatt Weckesser led the way with 11 points.

Grandview Heights will host No. 17 Fairfield Christian (2-19) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the sectional finals.

#5 Newark Catholic (12-11) 67, #16 Kipp Columbus (7-13) 58

Despite trailing 46-41 after three quarters, No.5 Newark Catholic  avoided the upset on Thursday night by coming alive in the fourth quarter behind some hot three-point shooting to take down Kipp: Columbus 67-58.

Newark Catholic will travel to No. 4 East Knox (15-7) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the sectional finals.

#2 Wellington (14-9) 99, #20 Madison Christian (1-19) 26

In another lopsided contest, No. 2 Wellington got out to a 62-14 halftime lead and never looked back as they steamrolled No. 20 Madison Christian 99-26.

MSL-Ohio Player of the Year Elijah Meredith led the Jaguars with 19 points, while Brandon Ivery and Yoshi Parker each added 16 of their own.

Wellington will host No. 18 Northside Christian (3-13) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the sectional finals

#13 Granville Christian (11-10) 65, #11 Millersport (9-14) 61 (ot)

In a thriller just a stone's throw away from Buckeye Lake, Granville Christian picked up a gutsy overtime win over Millersport. Despite 33 points from Millersport junior guard Mason Purvis, Granville Christian survived late, 65-61.

29 big points and two clutch last second free throws from sophomore guard Joe Benvie helped the Lions put the host Lakers away, despite Purvis' best efforts.

Millersport led for most of the game, stretching its lead to as much as six points in the third quarter. Granville Christian was not fazed, however, as the Lions' patient offensive attack and some big shots from Benvie helped them gain a lead in the final frame.

A steal and three-point play from Purvis gave Millersport a 55-53 lead with a little over a minute to go in regulation. On the following possession, Granville Christian senior Thomas Benvie was fouled going to the rim with just under a minute remaining.

Benvie hit both free throws to tie the game at 55. On its next trip down the floor, Millersport took nearly a minute off the clock but were not able to convert, as Purvis missed a three at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime knotted at 55.

In overtime, Granville Christian's defense shined, as the Lions held Millersport without a field goal for the entire period.

While Granville Christian led by as many as five points in the period, the Lions saw that lead quickly evaporate behind some more gusty play from Purvis.

Going on a 6-0 run on all free throws, Purvis' clutch defense and foul shooting helped Millersport take a momentary 61-60 lead.

Granville Christian wasn't ready to be done yet, as two big free throws from Sam Short gave the Lions its final lead at 62-61 with 31.2 seconds to go.

Despite a handful of opportunities in the final 30 seconds, Millersport could not convert, as timely free throw shooting and tight defense helped Granville Christian advance into the sectional finals with a 65-61 win.

The Benvie brothers combined for 43 points with the sophomore Joe leading the team with 29.

For Millersport, Mason Purvis led all scorers with 33 points, while his brother Carter Purvis added nine of his own.

With the win, Granville Christian will travel to No. 3 Berne Union on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the sectional finals.
