The Raiders pick up a huge road win led by Sean Moore’s fourth quarter explosion

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Tuesday’s victory for the Reynoldsburg Raiders notches their second win in a row and six of their last seven, and might just be their best of the year.

Senior Sean Moore led the way by adding 22 points, 12 of which in the fourth quarter giving the Raiders (10-6) a huge 58-47 win on the road at Westerville South (10-5).

Reynoldsburg senior James Dean started the game out with a driving layup and then Westerville South junior Jaiden Guice added six straight points early in the first quarter.

The Raiders ended the first frame on a 9-0 run, led by senior Nick Wallace’s three pointer and  steal resulting in a transition layup from the senior Moore. This huge run gave Reynoldsburg a first quarter lead of 13-6.

Moore and Westerville South junior Peter Podrozo each traded three point baskets for their squads to start the second quarter.

Junior Zaveon Croff got an explosive offensive rebound for the put back layup to give Reynoldsburg a seven point lead with about two minutes left in the first half.

Senior Stephon Saint-Cyr and Podrozo helped chip away at the Reynoldsburg lead, but the Raiders held a halftime lead of 24-19.

Westerville South struggled to find their groove from behind the arc in the first half, due to a strong 2-3 zone defense by Reynoldsburg.

At the start of the third quarter, Guice got things started for the Wildcats with a pair of three pointers. Junior Unisa Kamara added to the Wildcats hot start to the half with back to back baskets in the paint.

Moore responded to the Wildcats hot start to the second half by tying the game at 32 with an impressive and-one conversion.

Guice continued his excellent third quarter by draining a three pointer and then hitting sophomore Drey Carter for the length of the court layup. Guice finished the quarter with 12 of his 22 points on the night, giving the Wildcats a 40-38 lead entering the final frame.

Reynoldsburg started out the fourth quarter red hot, due to Moore’s 10 points, less than three minutes into the quarter. Moore’s stellar start to the quarter resulted in a 48-43 lead for the Raiders with 5:11 left in the fourth quarter.

A midrange transition bucket for junior Tabari Howard cut the Raider lead to 48-45 with 2:44 left in the fourth quarter. This was as close as the Wildcats would get, due to efficient free throw shooting by sophomore Julian Heckman and a timely and-one basket by Dean.

This huge road win for Reynoldsburg could have major implications in the 270 Hoops power rankings, as well as Central District seeding as the tournament draw approaches.

The Reynoldsburg Raiders will look to extend their winning streak to three this Friday in an OCC-Ohio matchup on the road against a struggling Grove City squad.

No. 8 Westerville South Wildcats will look to get back on track this Friday in an OCC-Buckeye matchup against a tough Olentangy Liberty team that has won six-straight.

Sean Moore (6’4 WG / Reynoldsburg / 2020): Moore is a long wing player that presents some matchup problems. He is a very versatile scorer, showing this off by his impressive range, dropping a trifecta of three pointers. He took over the game in the fourth quarter scoring 10 in the frame, and 22 on the night. The senior also provided a game high seven rebounds. Moore was the best player on the court Tuesday and will need to continue to do so for the Raiders to keep their winning ways going.

Julian Heckman (6’0 PG / Reynoldsburg / 2022): The sophomore guard controlled the flow of the game the entire night. He is a good ball handler and has outstanding court vision. A more than capable scorer, Heckman broke down the opponents defense to put his teammates in a solid position to score. The sophomore guard finished with a game high eight assists, as he is one of the area's leaders in that category despite being an underclassman. Heckman is becoming a leader for this Reynoldsburg team as they are heating up with tournament draw fast approaching.

Jaiden Guice (5'11 G / Westerville South / 2021): Guice is a flat out scorer. He started the game running the baseline against the Reynoldsburg zone. This resulted in six first quarter points on mid range jumpers. He took over the game in the third quarter, finding his touch from deep. The junior dropped three from behind the arc and got fouled on another. Guice converted all three foul shots resulting in a 12 point third quarter. Most of his scoring was catch and shoot, however he does a great job of moving and finding the open areas of the floor. His footwork and shot preparation before the catch making for quite the quick release.

Nick Wallace (5’11 WG / Reynoldsburg / 2020): Wallace did a little bit of everything for the Raiders in Tuesday’s matchup. He is a crafty scorer. His movement and cutting away from the ball created several back door opportunities where his backcourt mate Heckman found him for easy scores. He is a capable perimeter shooter and good rebounder from the guard position. He filled the stat sheet tonight with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. This type of production from Wallace will help make Reynoldsburg a very dangerous team going forward.
