DJ Moore’s 25 points lead the way for the Warriors on the road against a tough Johnstown team

JOHNSTOWN, Ohio -- In a matchup featuring two of the top teams in Division III, the Worthington Christian Warriors knock off the Johnstown Johnnies on the road by a score of 70-47.

Sophomore DJ Moore led the way for the Warriors with 25 points, 13 of which coming from the free throw line.

Moore started the game off for Worthington Christian with a steal leading to a transition basket. Junior Jake Lusk followed with an impressive drive to the hoop for a basket through contact for the early Johnstown lead.

Senior Derrick Hardin ended the first frame with back to back baskets, cutting the Johnstown lead to 12-11.

Worthington Christian started the second quarter red hot by going on a 12-2 run. The Warriors run was led by two Moore free throws, a Hardin three pointer, and a mid range basket by junior Isaiah Hazelwood.

The Warriors run was stopped by a powerful dunk off an inbound play by junior Gavin Foe.

The Johnnies attempted a run of their own to end the first half, led by an “and one” conversion by Lusk and a strong finish through contact by senior Derek Foe. Despite the late run by the Johnnies, Moore responded by pouring six of his points in the second quarter, giving the Warriors a 31-21 halftime lead.

The Warriors started the second half by extending their lead to 38-23, behind a Hardin three pointer and a strong finish by Moore.

Despite the Warriors' large lead, the Johnnies never wavered. Senior Matt Sayers converted an “and one” basket and Lusk made another strong drive to the basketball to cut the Warriors lead to eight.

The Warriors ended the third quarter with a 47-34 lead, ignited by Moore. Moore put up 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals in the quarter to take over the game and extend the Warriors lead entering into the final frame.

The super sophomore Moore continued his strong showing entering the fourth quarter by finishing a drive to the hoop and providing a pair of assists. Derrick Hardin sealed the deal for the Warriors with under two minutes left to play by getting his own rebound for the put back, resulting in an “and one” conversion.

Worthington Christian executed flawlessly down the stretch as they broke through Johnstown’s pressure and converted at the line to close out the game

The Warriors are peaking at the perfect time as they enter the second half of an extremely competitive MSL-Ohio.

No. 3 Worthington Christian (10-4) will look to continue their winning ways when they host No. 2 (D4) Grandview Heights in a MSL-Ohio matchup on Saturday. No. 6 Johnstown (7-6) will look to get back on track when they host Licking Valley in an LCL crossover matchup on Tuesday.

DJ Moore (6'3 PG / Worthington Christian / 2022): Moore showed the potential to be one of the more elite guards in the 2022 class. He has an explosive first step off the dribble with exceptional ball handling skills and his ability to go left or right paired with his strong frame allowed him to create contact in the paint and convert . Moore lived at the free throw line tonight by going 13 out of 15, including six straight in the fourth quarter. His clutch free throw shooting halted any chance for a Johnstown comeback. He has big upside as the floor leader for a deep, talented Warriors team looking to make a run in Division III this year.

Jake Lusk (6’3 PF / Johnstown / 2021): Lusk is one of the stronger players in the area. Not only is Lusk a standout on the football field for the Johnnies, he showed that he is also a leader on the court, by directing the offense and making sure his teammates were in the correct spots. He finds a way to finish against taller players and showed more diversity to his offensive game tonight. It was difficult for Lusk to get touches on the block, so he began to step away from the basket and attack off the dribble. Lusk will need to continue to show what he has in his arsenal for the Johnnies to make a run in Division III this year.

Derrick Hardin (6’2 G / Worthington Christian / 2020): This silky smooth scorer opened up his offensive arsenal by scoring all over the floor tonight. He showed off his range and is one of the top three point shooters in the area. Hardin also created his own shot off the bounce, resulting in multiple shots in the paint. His movement away from the ball set him up for easy looks as he finished with 16 points. Recently receiving his first offer from Mount Vernon Nazarene, Hardin would be a great look for Division II, III and NAIA programs seeking the offensive firepower that he provides on the perimeter.

Gavin Foe (6’2 PG / Johnstown / 2021): Foe is one of the more athletic guards in Licking County and greater Central Ohio for that matter. He runs the point for the Johnnies but is not afraid to mix it up in the paint. He shows this asset by posting up smaller guards and is continually one of Johnstown’s top rebounders. The play of the night for Johnstown was his emphatic two hand dunk off an inbounds play. The junior continues to show his exciting potential, as there aren't many lead guards in Central Ohio that have Foe's size, athleticism and high wire playmaking ability. If Foe can continue to develop his outside shot, it'll make him one of the more intriguing lead guards in the 2021 class.
