19 points from Cole Canter led the way for Newark Catholic in a big Division IV road win

LANCASTER, Ohio -- In an LCL vs. MSL showdown, Newark Catholic ended a three-game losing streak with a huge win over the Fisher Catholic on the road, 52-40.

The Newark Catholic sophomore duo of Cole Canter with 19 points and Brandon Buchanan with seven points, six rebounds, and stellar defense on the Irish season scoring leader and senior Bryson Vogel, led the way for the Green Wave in what could be a Division IV district tournament preview.

Newark Catholic senior Slater Evans and Fisher Catholic junior Alex Bronden both started out the first frame with a steal, which led to transition baskets.

Canter and Vogel drained three point baskets for their team to end the first quarter with a Fisher Catholic lead of 7-5.

At 4:17 left in the second quarter, Fisher Catholic senior Kaden Starcher contributed a steal, which led to a transition layup. Canter responded with a timely three pointer, but Fisher Catholic still remained with the lead of 11-9.

Brandon Buchanan made a nice pass to Matthew Carlisle inside to tie the game, the Irish responded with baskets of their own giving them a halftime lead of 15-13.

The Green Wave started the second half clicking on all cylinders, which resulted in winning the third quarter by a score of 21-6. Canter started the second half with a low post turnaround and a stolen inbound pass for the lay in. Evans added to the run as well with a blow by lay up.

Canter and Buchanan ended the third frame by providing the Green Wave with back to back three point baskets. Buchanan was a key contributor on the defensive end by holding the Irish big man Vogel to only four points at the end of the third quarter. Newark Catholic’s explosive run gave them the third quarter lead of 34-21 over the Irish.

At 4:20 in the fourth quarter, Bronden and Vogel gave the Irish a spark that cut the Newark Catholic lead to single digits. During this run, Bronden contributed eight of his 10 points in the fourth, while Vogel pitched in seven of his 11 points.

The Green Wave stopped the Irish’s run quickly by spreading the floor and icing the game at the line. The Green Wave win over the Irish could have potential Division IV seeding implications with the tournament draw less than a month away.

Newark Catholic (7-5, 2-4) will host the Crooksville Ceramics on Thursday and look to keep winning. Fisher Catholic (8-6, 3-2) will host the Fairfield Christian Academy Knights on Friday to resume MSL-Buckeye play.

Cole Canter (6’3 WG / Newark Catholic / 2022): Canter is the offensive leader for the Green Wave with his versatile scoring. The sophomore showed the ability to take over the game when his team struggled to score. He had solid range from behind the arc resulting in a trifecta of three pointers. A transfer from Bishop Ready, Canter has been a big boost for a young Newark Catholic team that has shown flashes of being a contender down the line in Division IV. As Canter continues to expand his game, it'll only help the Green Wave as they seem to go as he goes.

Brandon Buchanan (6’3 WF / Newark Catholic / 2022): Buchanan was a difference maker on both ends of the court. His defensive abilities were on full display, considering he held the Irish’s leading scorer on the season to just four points through the first three quarters. On offense he showed the ability to score from the perimeter as well as break down defenders and get to the paint. Buchanan was pivotal in a hard fought close game and will be needed going forward.

Bryson Vogel (6’4 WF / Fisher Catholic / 2020): Vogel showed off his versatility in the loss on Monday. His length and instincts make him a very good rebounder and defender. He is able to run the team from the point guard position where he has good vision and is able to create shots for his teammates. He shoots with range and was able to get to the line by attacking and getting shots off with contact. The senior showed big upside on a night where opportunities were limited.
