Damian Davis' hot night leads Bexley to an impressive non-league win over Bloom-Carroll

BEXLEY, Ohio -- Coming off of a major league win, Bloom-Carroll looked to take care of 2-10 Bexley on Friday. However, Damian Davis’ blazing hot game pushed the envelope for the Lions to grab their third win, taking down the Bulldogs 47-33.

In the first the Bulldogs owned the boards largely due to the contributions of junior Ryan Williams with two offensive boards. The defense from Bloom-Carroll was superb in the first, creating multiple turnovers and locking Bexley down on that end. With the defense rolling it was Kuhns’ turn to join in, getting to buckets in the paint and hitting a deep three-pointer to cap off the quarter.

The second was riddled with much of the same patterns of the first until late in the frame. The Bulldogs harassed the Lions on defense and on the boards, forcing turnover after turnover and block after block.

With four minutes remaining in the half, Kuhns stole the ball at the top of the key and got a transition layup to increase the lead to 19-9. On the next trip down the Lions hit a three-pointer and stole the ball right after to create a quick five point swing.

Down by five, Davis took matters into his own hands, hitting a deep three-pointer and a steal and score to end the half tied 19-19.

The Lions started right where they left off to begin the third, trading interior buckets. Davis caught his groove once again, stealing the spotlight from Kuhns and the Bulldogs. Davis went on his own whopping 10-3 run in a variety of ways. The elite scoring by Davis shows the versatility and skill he possesses and could be what Bexley needs to go on a winning streak.

The Bulldogs attempted to fight back with Kuhns hitting another three-pointer to bring the score back within two. The attempts were fruitless as the Lions continued to push ahead ending the quarter leading 38-27.

As the fourth started the Lions began to slow the ball in and fall into a half court game. As the chance for the Bulldogs to come back dwindled, the Lion’s fouled and got a technical called on them immediately after, offering the Bulldogs a chance to bring it to an eight point deficit.

However, the ball did not roll the Bulldog’s way as they missed one of the free throws and could not get a bucket with the extra possession they gained. As the game wound down the Lions had a sizable lead and were able to dribble out the clock for the 47-33 win.

Damian Davis (5’10 G / Bexley / 2020): Davis was exceptional and provided Bexley almost half of their scoring. Not only was Davis a prolific scorer with 21 points but he was able to score in any way you could think of, from range, inside, and from the line. Not only is he a scorer but he also played perfectly into the defensive system. Davis’ initiating skills were superb in the game and allowed for scoring opportunities even when he did not do it himself.

Otto Kuhns (6’3 WG / Bloom Carroll / 2020): In a slow scoring game for Bloom Carroll, Kuhns was the only player to play consistently. Scoring 14 in the game and playing quality defense, he was able to separate himself from the others and break the inconsistencies. However, with not much help Kuhns’ efforts were not enough to overcome the blazing hot Lions.
