A deep dive into the last 10 years of Central Ohio high school basketball

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It's the last day of the month. The last day of the year. The last day of the decade. And for Central Ohio, 10 years of high school basketball in the 2010s comes to a halt.

This decade means a lot to us. After all, 270 Hoops didn't even exist on December 31, 2009 - let alone anyone who covered high school basketball on the internet and through various social media channels.

At this time 10 years ago, Jared Sullinger, Trey Burke, JD Weatherspoon and Northland took the nation by storm and were in the midst of what seemed to be another sure fire state championship campaign.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, upset struck in the regional finals a few months later when fellow undefeated Gahanna shocked the nation's No. 1 team, as what seemed to be a million threes from Sam Bott struck the bottom of the net in a 71-45 shellacking.

The area wouldn't see another state champion until two years later when Jerry Francis, in his first campaign as Pickerington Central's head coach, took a lineup that consisted of Caris LeVert, Jae'Sean Tate, Javon Bess, Conner Kern, Taco Charlton and Chad Nelson all the way, defeating Toledo Whitmer in the 2012 Division I state championship.

The area remained victorious the next year, as Vince Lombardo led Bishop Watterson to its first state title in school history, knocking off heralded freshman VJ King and national juggernaut St. Vincent-St. Mary in the 2013 Division II championship.

2014 was the first year of full-time coverage for 270 Hoops co-founders Zach Fleer and Jason Morrow. Fleer, who was writing for SB Nation's Land-Grant Holy Land at the time, got his first taste of the state tournament on press row that year (thank you to NBC4's Matt Barnes for the pass hookup, sorry Tim Stried).

Covering both Bishop Watterson and Upper Arlington, the two programs, separated by roughly seven miles, were on the wrong side of heartbreak. As Fleer wrote in his next-day column, "some things just aren't meant to be," and that was the damn truth, as Watterson suffered a major upset at the hands of Ben Haraway and Jeff Thomas' Norwalk Truckers squad in the Division II state final.

It got even worse a few hours later when Upper Arlington's pursuit of its first state title since 1937 came crashing down at the fingertips of Lakewood St. Edward senior Marsalis Hamilton, whose buzzer-beating three-pointer, only his second ALL SEASON, hit the bottom of the net and forced overtime.

The Golden Bears, who didn't lose a single game in regulation all season, never regained its momentum and Kevin Vannatta's miracle run lost its legs as the Eagles controlled tempo and ground out Upper Arlington in front of a near sold out crowd that made the short trip east on Lane Avenue.

2015 seemed to be the year of redemption for Central Ohio. The area was loaded. You could start in the 2015 class with players like Khalil Iverson (pro), David Dennis (pro) and Jordan Dartis (soon to be pro) who were the veterans in Columbus.

But that 2016 class though, yo, we haven't seen anything like it. Let's just do a rundown of who was in that class.

  • Seth Towns, Harvard
  • Nick Ward, Michigan State
  • Andre Wesson, Ohio State
  • Jason Carter, Xavier
  • Ibi Watson, Dayton
  • Jalen Tate, Northern Kentucky
  • James Manns, Wright State
  • Matt Moyer, Vanderbilt
  • Onno Steger, Western Carolina

With nearly a dozen Division I signees and the majority of them still in college, with the exception of Ward, who is now in the NBA G League, the 2016 group seemed to set the tone for Columbus.

But it didn't stop there. During the 2014-15 season, you also had guys like Kaleb Wesson and BJ Duling that were seeing heavy minutes as sophomores. We had to wait another year before the emergence of dominant big men like Nick Muszynski, now the best center in the entire Ohio Valley Conference at Belmont, and Sterling Manley, who overcame a serious leg injury to sign with North Carolina.

If that wasn't enough, the 2018 class were just freshmen at the time and players like Dane Goodwin, who at the beginning of the 2014-15 had already been offered and committed to Ohio State, and Jerome Hunter, now at Indiana, were drawing rave reviews. We didn't even know about guys like Taevion Kinsey, Jelani Simmons and Adrian Nelson at that point.

Central Ohio was THAT loaded.

But the 2014-15 season, as great as it looked on paper, did not amount in a state title for the area, as Westerville South's 27-1 warpath fell at the hands of questionable officiating and Huber Heights Wayne in the 2015 Division I state championship.

Harvest Prep redeemed itself for a loss in the 2014 state semifinals and was one bucket away from a 2015 Division IV state championship, however, Colton Linkous and Tri-Village ended that dream as Davis wrapped his Warrior career with a record of 51-6, a pair of Athens regional titles and a bad taste in his mouth - one that his father and Harvest Prep head coach David Dennis Sr. wouldn't recover from for another four years.

While the conclusion of the 2014-15 season was a bittersweet one with the many studs in that class graduating and moving on to the next level, that summer changed everything.

270 Hoops was born.

Beginning merely as a pipe dream and eventual podcast, Fleer and Morrow decided to join forces and create something for the area that Central Ohio had never seen.

That's what happened and what is continuing to evolve in front of our eyes every single day.

Fortunately for 270, its inaugural season in 2015-16 was a legendary one. A few highlights from that year include Towns' breaking Northland's all-time scoring record and surpassing legends like Sullinger and Burke along the way and Westerville South winning its first state title in school history - knocking off unbeaten Lima Senior.

In the five years in our history, 270 Hoops has seen more than a thousand basketball games in Central Ohio, journaling and recording every step of the way.

With the conclusion of a decade looming in the coming hours, it's time to take a look back and see which players make our All-Decade teams for the 2010s.

With the help of 270 Hoops historian John Stampe, here is what we came up with.
