Scotty Lomax and Tymire Jones lead Groveport to a tough win despite a late rally from Teays Valley

ASHVILLE, Ohio -- After starting the season 3-0, Teays Valley dropped two games since and looked to regain some momentum by protecting their home court on Monday night. Meanwhile, after losing four in a row, Groveport Madison bounced back by beating Granville and needed a win to extend the streak and get back to an even record.

The Vikings fell behind early in the game but rallied back in the second and third to take the lead. Groveport’s defense excelled all game but really showed up in the first and fourth quarters. Pulling away in the fourth, largely due to their outside shooting, the Cruisers held the ball up by six with less than a minute left. They kept their momentum going with a 65-56 win.

In the first, the Cruisers forced multiple turnovers and took  an early six point lead. Teays Valley’s offense started out extremely slow with the exception of junior Camden Primmer. With 7 points in the first, Primmer kept Groveport from taking a huge lead.

Groveport’s ball movement and transition play was spectacular in the fourth, gaining most of their points from transition and seeing six players make a field goal.

Groveport came out of the break with two quick steals and two quick transition buckets. At this point, they were beginning to look like they would run away with the lead. Leading 23-16 with 4:33 remaining in the second, Groveport looked faster and more conditioned, forcing the Vikings to run the court with them.

Teays Valley responded with a run to bring the game within three and gave Groveport a taste of their own medicine in transition, gaining momentum the longer the quarter went on.

Groveport, holding for the final possession, made a sloppy pass allowing for a Teays Valley steal and score. At the end of the second, the Cruisers led 31-28.

After halftime the Vikings came out blazing beyond the arc and locking down on defense. Revitalized, Teays Valley forced turnovers and contested shots all over the court. As the Vikings caught momentum they took their first lead of the game, 38-37 with 3:24 remaining in the third.

For the remainder of the quarter the teams traded buckets and the Vikings kept their one point lead. In the final 30 seconds of the quarter, the Cruisers got a steal leading to an and-one on the opposite end of the court to go into the fourth leading 44-42.

The fourth allowed for the Cruisers to catapult themselves, getting seemingly every ball to bounce their way. Getting an offensive rebound three minutes into the quarter, junior Scotty Lomax got the ball and pulled up for a three-pointer to stretch the lead to eight.

With Groveport having a strong handle on Teays Valley, they held the ball and forced the Vikings to attempt traps and eventually foul. The Cruisers made their free throws and despite junior Garrett Meddock’s best attempts to come back, the Cruisers held on down the stretch.

Scotty Lomax (6’2 G / Groveport Madison / 2021): Lomax was very good on both sides of the court, using his speed and agility to force tons of turnovers. He also destroyed the Vikings in transition, constantly blowing by defenders for easy finishes. Alongside Jones, Lomax provided great ball handling skills and finishing ability near the rim. Lomax’s athleticism along with the teams collective speed allowed the Cruisers to run the court and tire out the Vikings in the first half. Lomax finished the game for the Cruisers with 14 points and two assists.

Camden Primmer (6’2 F / Teays Valley / 2021): Primmer was the driving force of offense in the first half, scoring 12 points and grabbing three boards. Primmer excelled on the inside and could get buckets at will. Primmer also helped the Vikings in major ways on defense in a time of struggle. So much so that the Vikings looked confused and sloppy with him off the court. Primmer on the court not only helped physically but anybody watching the game could tell how much of a leader he was. One of the biggest intangibles you cannot teach helps Primmer makes impacts on the team that no other teammate provides.

Garett Meddock (5’11 G / Teays Valley / 2021): Meddock started out slow in the first quarter but provided six points for the Vikings in the second quarter. In the second half Meddock shined through the difficulties the Vikings were presented. Scoring 12 in the second half, he led the Vikings in their comeback attempt and created nearly all of the offense in the fourth. Before Teays fell too far behind, Meddock kept the game close by hitting back to back threes and a transition layup in the fourth. After Primmer slowed down, Meddock was Teays Valley’s consistent offensive force and was a sharpshooter from behind the arc.
