Trey Woodyard and Jainaz Cameron lead London to a big win over Miami Trace in Holiday Tournament final

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio -- It took two and a half quarters but once London’s dominant juniors settled in they were able to take over this afternoon’s game and power the Red Raiders to their second straight McDonald’s Holiday Tournament title, taking down Miami Trace 56-43.

6-foot-6 junior Trey Woodyard led the way for London with 21 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Woodyard scored nine in both the second and third quarters which really helped hold off a Miami Trace run and then extend London’s lead.

6-foot-7 junior Jainaz Cameron also had himself a day, impacting the game in many different facets. He finished with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Cameron and Woodyard were so in sync with each other all afternoon that outside of scoring, they finished with the same stat line.

The game started slow for both teams before London used a 9-0 run in the first quarter to jump out to an early lead. London led 29-19 at half after Miami Trace failed to capitalize on a technical foul and having the last possession of the half.

However, the Panthers came out of the locker room motivated and went on a 7-0 run, cutting the lead London lead to as little as three. That’s when Woodyard and Cameron began to go to work again, helping the Red Raiders pull away and build up an 18-point lead by the end of the third quarter.

Miami Trace found some production from 6-foot-6 junior Dylan Bernard. The big man finished with 12 points for the Panthers. 6-foot-8 junior Logan Rodgers added eight points and pulled in 12 rebounds.

Also for the Panthers was senior guard Trevor Barker. Barker had a nice effort, finishing with nine points, two rebounds, and three steals.

With the win, London now sits at 6-3 and continues their season on Friday, Jan. 3 as they host Tecumseh in Central Buckeye Conference league play.

For Miami Trace, they are now 6-5 and look to bounce back against Clinton Massie on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Trey Woodyard (6’6 WG / London / 2021): Woodyard is a playmaker. The 6-foot-6 guard is long and athletic and uses that to his advantage everywhere on the floor. He scored most of his points in the interior, either off the dribble or in transition. After making a few steals today he showed off impressive moves in getting around defenders and finishing at the rim. The junior still has a smooth shooting stroke and is a capable shooter from deep, as he hit two threes. In addition to his scoring abilities, Woodyard displayed patience and vision as he didn’t force shots and made great passes to set his teammates up. We love the level of IQ Woodyard brings to the floor. He is the type of player to make his entire team better. Look for him to continue to lead this talented roster through the rest of the season.

Jainaz Cameron (6’7 F / London / 2021): Cameron made plays in each statistical category tonight and was huge in London’s win. The 6-foot-7 junior spent a lot of his time around the three-point line in the victory, but showed that he has a good handle on the ball for his size. He showed some range too by stepping back and hitting a three early in the game. The most impressive stat of the night for the athletic forward is the two charges he stepped in to take. Cameron is a physical force that contributes on both sides for London. His level of play will be key regarding just how successful London will be this year.

Logan Rodgers (6’8 F / Miami Trace / 2021): Rodgers was quiet offensively today, but brought in just about every missed shot that went in his direction. The 6-foot-8 forward is very athletic and brings lots of energy to the floor when he plays. Rodgers is capable of scoring and guarding in the post and did a solid job today atop Miami Trace’s full court press, getting deflections and causing turnovers. The junior only scored eight after a 30 point performance two days ago in the semifinal of the tournament, but look for him to bounce back and be more consistent for the Panthers throughout the season. The big man played in the open division of the 270 Hoops Fall League and is a player that we will continue to keep tabs on, despite Miami Trace falling just outside of our primary coverage area.
