Casey George, Chris Scott and Jerry Saunders combine for 49 in big road win for Pick North

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Friday’s battle of top ten opponents didn’t disappoint as Pickerington North outlasted St. Charles 63-58 behind a combined 49 points from Casey George, Chris Scott and Jerry Saunders.

Pickerington North forced St. Charles to turn  the ball over early on, but the host Cardinals were able to stay close with stellar half court defense.  When they settled into their offense, St. Charles found points, however, Pickerington North ramped up its pressure to turn turnovers into instant offense. Holding a 15-10 lead after a quarter of play, Pickerington North picked it up defensively behind the efforts of the sophomore Saunders in the second quarter. While Saunders handled his business on defense, the senior Scott began to get hot on offense, scoring 10 points in the period to help Pickerington North take a 33-25 edge into the halftime break.

Pickerington North got out to a 41-29 lead with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter, but St. Charles freshman big Chase Walker refused to let the game get out of hand as he went off for nine points in the frame alone to cut the deficit to 49-41 at the end of the period.

St. Charles continued to fight as a three point shot from Spencer Martin cut the deficit to just three points in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for St. Charles, they wouldn’t get any closer then that as Pickerington North took care of business at the line and held on to secure another top 10 victory.

For Pickerington North, the junior guard George led all scorers with 20 points while Scott added 15, Saunders 14 and senior Hunter Shedenhelm chipped in eight to round out the Panther offense.

For St. Charles, the freshman Walker led all Cardinal scorers with 13 points, while sophomore guard Derrick James added 12 and Martin finished with nine.

Casey George (6’0 G / Pickerington North / 2021): The junior guard continued his break out year showing off his ability to create his shot at will. He made shots from all over  the floor knocking down two threes, hitting from the mid range area and finishing at the rim. His stock continues to rise as you just know what he brings to the table. He ran the offense and got his shots within the offense never seeming forceful. Defensively he provided solid on ball pressure all night. George is putting together a season that might be the best among all junior lead guards in the area up to this point with his overall impact that he provides for a very good Panthers team.

Chase Walker (6’6 C / St Charles / 2023): When he’s aggressive and carving out space on the block ,the freshman is simply just too much to handle. It didn’t take long during his third quarter stretch for Walker to attract two defenders every time he touched the basketball. He impressed with his soft touch, footwork and skill level that is rare to find in young bigs. Over time, Walker could become deadly passing out of the post as he’ll see his fair share of double teams. He's the best young back to the basket big that we've seen in the last few years, as his frame and overall mass reminds us a bi of a younger Kaleb Wesson.

Jerry Saunders (6'0  G / Pickerington North / 2022): You’d be hard pressed to find  a lot of guards who always bring it defensively like Saunders does. He was a nightmare on ball for opposing players, making life difficult for them. The sophomore had a number of steals and made some great defensive rotations. Offensively, he had a solid showing as well, knocking down catch and shoot opportunities and showing the ability to create for himself off the dribble. Saunders is a guy we really look forward to watching grow over the next three years

Spencer Martin  (5’10 G / St Charles / 2020): The senior continues to show that he is a reliable and deadly option from beyond the arc. For a St. Charles team that often features two bigs on the floor, he’s the ultimate floor spacer and that was on display Friday as he drilled three threes.

Chris Scott (6’0 G / Pickerington North / 2020): Scott continues to bring the energy and toughness that his teammates feed off. He was very active defensively coming up with some steals. Offensively, he relentlessly drove downhill where he scored at will. Scott is an x factor for this team and will play a huge role in how far they’ll go this year, as he provides the glue and edge that helps North compete among the elite in the area.
