Hilliard Bradley passes major test in grind it out win over Lakewood St. Edward

BEXLEY, Ohio -- Doing what they do best, Hilliard Bradley executed at the free throw line down the stretch and made some big plays on the defensive end to pick up a huge win over St. Edward at the Capital City Coaches for a Cure Classic at Capital University, 60-50.

After just about as back-and-forth of a start as you can get had to=he two squads knotted up at 6-6, Hilliard Bradley used a three from Keaton Norris and a transition finish from the junior after a beautiful outlet pass from Matt Allocco to give the Jags an 11-6 lead with 2:50 left in the first.

Eds answered with a triple from Grant Huffman to trim the lead to 11-9, but Hilliard Bradley scored four straight points to end the quarter capped off by layup from Chris Mayfield to take a 15-9 lead into the second.

Following two three's from AJ Mirgon and a tip in from Tayshaun Mayfield, the Jags held a 23-12 lead with 6:26 left in the second. Unfortunately for Hilliard Bradley, they struggled to put the ball in the hole for the rest of the half.

Ending the half on an 11-2 run, Eds used a couple of big three's and a coast to coast steal and bucket from Huffman to trim the Hilliard Bradley lead to 25-23 heading into the break.

While St. Edward claimed a 29-27 lead with 5:57 left in the third after a steal and bucket from senior Montorie Foster, neither squad could create any separation throughout the quarter as two free throws from Tayshaun Mayfield allowed Bradley to claim a 38-35 lead going into the final eight minutes.

Neither team led by more than two points in the final quarter until Allocco converted on an easy layup from Mirgon to push the Hilliard Bradley lead to 47-43 with 2:03 to go.

Extending this lead to 51-43 after four free throws from Allocco and Norris, the Jags created some much needed separation and executed at the line for the rest of the contest before Allocco threw down a big slam to put the icing on the cake.

The Jags move to 7-0 after the win and they will host Teays Valley next Saturday in a favorable matchup.

Matt Allocco (6'4 G / Hilliard Bradley / 2020): We've said it once before and we'll say it again, Allocco is a WINNER. Demanding the ball and making some huge plays down the stretch, he was the catalyst for the Jaguars in an extremely impressive win. Hitting shots from all three levels during the game, Allocco nailed two tough turn arounds out of the post, knocked down three off the catch and finished off a handful of easy buckets near the rim. Drawing contact off the dribble and getting to the line plenty of times, the senior converted on an extremely high percentage of his shots at the stripe down the stretch. Throwing some good outlet passes and creating some good looks in the halfcourt, he also set up his teammates for some easy scores as he has one of the highest IQ's in the area and puts perfect touch on his passes. You will be hard-pressed to find a better leader than Allocco as he in an elite competitor who has only lost six games in his high school career.

AJ Mirgon (5'11 G / Hilliard Bradley / 2021): Mirgon continues to increase his scoring production for Hilliard Bradley as he is excelling as a secondary option to Allocco. Knocking down a couple of tough three's and hitting a shot from the mid-range, Mirgon was extremely efficient on that end of the floor. He made a ton of the little plays for the Jags as well, securing a ton of defensive rebounds to prevent Eds from getting extra possessions as well as making some good decisions and passes while facing traps from St. Edward. We like how AJ competes on the defensive perimeter as well as he can be used as a point of attack defender and plays well off the ball with an extremely high IQ. We wouldn't be surprised to see him lead Hilliard Bradley in scoring a few times this year as he can beat guys off the bounce and can really get going from deep in a hurry.

Keaton Norris (5'11 G / Hilliard Bradley / 2021): While Norris doesn't put up huge numbers within the Hilliard Bradley offense, he always plays his role on both ends of the floor for the Jags. Norris defends hard, makes great reads and rotations within the defense and is an advanced passer in the halfcourt. While the best part of his game is his outside shooting, the junior has shown the ability to get to the rim off the dribble early on this season, as he has the craftiness to finish some tough buckets around the rim and is an impressive passer off the dribble. Just like the rest of the Jags roster, Norris simply loves to win and plays his role every night because of it.
